Jewson driver's answer to snow covered hill?
A few cars, vans and ambulances have been slip-sliding up Cavendish Road today, so I was curious to see how a Jewson lorry would fare.
Answer: Just go extra fast. Really attack those speed bumps that are for vehicles up to 7.5 tonnes. How lovely of them.

They must have had an address to drop off to in Cavendish. They know from previous discussions on here that they're not allowed to use it for access. Their only option is to use Wightman Rd from the Turnpike Lane end, legally. Call the Police...

They are always coming up here to access the yard. Up here to it, and down Burgoyne on the way out. I emailed SNT and they told me this was allowed as per right of access.
I wouldn't mind if they just came up slowly. A couple of the drivers are constantly at it.
I'm determined to have the last laugh though.

I know your pain as I'm on Warham Road.
From what I've heard they're not allowed. "Except for access" means if there's no other route. i.e. if they're delivering to your street or Cavendish was the only way to get to the yard. I'll wager they're not delivering to your road and there is another route to the yard. Question is, what to do about it...

Get it in writing from the SNT. The law is VERY clear, their only 'allowed' access is via Wightman Rd (i.e. the road they are on) and even then only from the northern end because of the limits on the bridge. I'm being unreasonable in pointing this out I know but they are being unreasonable in the way they drive, no?

Please write to Jewsons and the council about this. There are extensive posts on Jewsons lorries on another thread - its only through people writing in to these organisations that we get any response.
I have also noticed that the Council has failed to put up the <except for access> signs at the top of Burgoyne - they really have given into Jewsons big time, and unfortunately its us home owners who end up paying for it with cracks in our walls, undermined foundations, and industrial traffic up and down our narrow streets.

Thank you for alerted me to this issue again. I am already trying to get the council to carry out some enforcement for the heavy goods vehicles and I will continue to hassle them on that. I'll also bring up the issue of Jewsons and write to them too

Karen, I wish you luck with this, but will watch in hope more than expectation.
I was dealing with a a very helpful council officer over the summer about this - I was provided with a copy of the relevant Council Ordinance (which I have posted previously) and advised that "If any vehicles are over 7.5t in weight and use Burgoyne Road for any reason other than access and providing the signage is still there (which I assume it is) then those vehicles should receive a penalty charge notice." but that "The only way we can enforce weight restrictions is to follow a vehicle through the zone by car because we have to prove that the vehicle is not using the road to make a delivery to a property within that zone."
With regard to Jewsons, I was given a rather ropey explanation that they were free to use whatever ladder street they want to access their yard, whenever they wanted to, which is not what the Ordinance says, as John M points out above. The officer I was dealing with seemed to take my point, but said this wasn't something he could make an 'executive decision' on, but that he was going to pass it on to another (presumably more senior) council officer to deal with. I never heard back (this was in August). I notice the weight limit signs have now disappeared from the top of Burgoyne though.
As I told the officer in my previous email before he referred the matter on "Ultimately, we appreciate Jewson's situation, and have tried to engage with them constructively. Having heavy lorries driving over the judder bars on Burgoyne at 20mph (as they seem to think they are entitled to do) means that our houses shake like there is an earthquake going on, waking residents up, and likely causing property damage. There are obvious liability issues for Jewsons and potentially the Council - all of which could be avoided if the drivers would simply slow down so that the houses don't shake!"

Hi Karen - if the council do not want to enforce the heavy goods vehicle restriction, then we should ask them to remove the speed bumps. The lorries totally ignore them and just take them at speed. It is teh speed bumps which really add to the problems of noise & vibration. Maybe posts restricting the width of vehicles ( which they use in Stroud Green) would be a much easier and more effective solution to both speed and HGV s.

I agree with width restrictions being much more effective at stopping lorries. Islington uses them (as well as millions of speed bumps) and they were effective when we were in Highbury.
