Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

This was this morning and we had to push our son to nursery on the road because of this. We have complained to the council something like 30 times about this problem created by Goykuzu and Hala restaurants and nothing has been done.

Is anyone else experiencing this kind of problem? Is there anything that can be done? The council are useless.

Why are those tins not in the recycling?

Its even worse today (see photo)

its shocking. Council don't act and Hala and Goykuzu can't give a damn about local residents.

they won't be getting anymore of my custom.

We have a similar problem on Cavendish. Not the fault of Dostlar who have recently tidied up their refuse area but must be all the other businesses who nip out of the back alley. Much worse recently (have the collection rates for businesses gone up maybe?) and often can't get a buggy past. Must get round to emailing some photos to the council. I think the solution must be about enforcement rather than just cleaning it up.

Can I mention a suggestion I've made several times in the past - a U.S. style Good Neighbour Agreement. (If you're googling it, use the 'bor' spelling.) Here are a couple of links to my previous posts on HoL. (1)   (2)

As you may imagine, this isn't something where I've had the slightest spark of interest or even curiosity from my fellow councillors.

(Tottenham Hale ward councillor)

P.S. A link in one of the posts no longer works: a Good Neighbor Agreement in Columbus Ohio. This one does.

Tried to get the bottom of Seymour Road cleaned up for years. Emailed every councillor alive. They started talking to me like it was MY falut the grotty bedsits at the bottom of the road were dumping rubbish. I even knew who was doing it - no action taken. It's pathetic.

I just had a quick word with one of the St Ann's ward councillors.

She was busy with some Brussels sprouts. But asked, Osbawn, that you do please report what you saw - anonymously if you prefer - giving the precise location and details as you remember. But in any case to let Zena know so she can follow-up after Christmas. Zena.Brabazon@haringey.gov.uk

They fined a builder last year for allowing his rubbish to be dumped in the passage. I put a video on youtube. Apparently he fessed up pretty quickly (he was a New Zealander I believe, for what it's worth) and just paid the council £300. But I have to ask myself how on earth they would prosecute a resident doing what you say they are doing.

I've no reason to doubt what you write, Osbawn. And I'm sure we could compare incidents, street-for-street and problem-for-problem. However, whether or not I'm a councillor, I'm still a resident and I haven't given up.

I don't know where you live but Salisbury Road is in St Ann's Ward and my partner Zena - one of the ward councillors - will take this up. But she does need your information, please.

The other incidents - where you got no response to reporting someone dumping - would also make me angry. It seems it was a Ladder road. In which case both David Schmitz and Karen Alexander are regulars on HoL and have shown their willingness to take up cases.

While the council continues to drift without any effective political or policy leadership, and while we still have the bonkers quasi-mayor structure, things aren't going to improve significantly.

Plus, cuts in Government funding mean staff cuts. Including those available to catch fly-tippers at night. Things have changed since the days when the BBC made A Life of Grime in Haringey

But small changes and small victories are still possible. Helped by the development of social media and residents being able to share information more quickly and easily with one another.

Neil I suspect you might be referring to the rubbish outside my property. You may also be aware that it's currently an HMO (not yet legal). it doesn't help but I have honestly tried everything to get them to dispose of their rubbish properly including writing letters and speaking to them directly. I've even spent time downstairs with marigolds and bin liners resorting the rubbish. but I can't do this every week. I currently have bin bags lined up in my hallway after having my family to stay for Christmas because we just can't have any more rubbish outside. if I had a car I would take it to the dump. please object to the current planning application on these grounds if you can. (I'm also suspicious that someone may actually be fly tipping). happy to discuss this matter by private message if you want more information.

Oshawn, could you please send me an email at David.Schmitz@haringey.gov.uk giving details of the complaint (e.g. Reference number of you have it). I'd very much like to put in a member's enquiry to find out how the complaint was "handled" in order to ensure that efforts by public -spirited residents aren't wasted.
Best,
David
I'd just like to say that when I contact 'Councillor' David Browne about the problem on Kimberley he treated me like I was stupid, as if there wasn't a problem and cut the call short in a very rude and impatient manner. If these are our 'authorities' we've no hope!
And why spend millions putting in mini squares when there's fly tips all over them? Waste of money and I think I'm going to write to the Outer London Fund to make them aware of this problem and not to waste their money!
