No Lord Mayor's Fireworks this year!

It's difficult to believe that there aren't some smaller public events organised by community organisations. Know of any?

Not too far away on the Piccadilly Line (Russell Square)

Many thanks for this Liz - went along this evening with the little one, and had a great time.

Coram Fields fireworks display was excellent! Thanks for the tip Liz.

Looking on the map of firework displays there's a huge void where we live (N8) of not a single municipal display for miles. Why don't we have big displays any more ?

I know where to avoid then

I'm terrified of them, ever since a guy with a mohican threw one at me when I was about three.  He missed, thankfully.  I've also been wary of guys with mohicans since.

That's a bit mohicanist, I had a mohican of differing colours for years but never threw fireworks.

I use to love Ally Pally fireworks, ahh damn government!

Ally Pally website mentions plans to bring back the fireworks next year for 150th anniversary - fingers crossed, really miss ally pally fireworks.

I hope so.  The fireworks were a real institution.

Re-instate the fireworks display? You got to be kidding! The last few years have probably been sheer heaven for local residents who regularly suffer this inconvienience. Let's leave the public displays to the other boroughs.

Maybe you could give further arguements to back up the inconvenience this 'probably' causes the local residents on this one night of the year ('regularly'???). I consider myself a local resident to Ally Pally, would walk up to the palace every year, but never saw any of this inconvenience, other than masses of people having a great time.

Just curious.

The issue, Thérèse, is money. There isn't any to spare.

Alexandra Palace is set up by Act of Parliament as a charitable Trust with the Council as Trustee.

It makes a large annual loss. Normally a charity is not allowed to run at a loss. But because of its anomalous legal position, several years ago the lawyers advised that the Council must cover its annual loss. Which means that the total "pot" the Council has to spend on all services for residents is reduced by the operating losses of the Ally Pally.

If the Ally Pally reinstated the annual fireworks, the additional cost would have to be picked up by the Council. Hugh posted information about this here.

(Tottenham Hale ward councillor)

Birdy_Too, throwing a firework at me was a bit three-year-old-ist!  I'm sure your mohican was bootiful.
