Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Frosting the Glass on Victorian Windows to stop people seeing in.

Just moved in to a Victorian house with lovely big windows. As much as I'd like to keep the light coming in, I want to stop people seeing in. I'm toying between Venetian blinds, lace, growing a hedge, wooden shutters.

But then I noticed a few properties using some sort of frosted film and just wondered if anyone knew the best application method and brand. Doest it work for you from a safety vs light aspect.

We got ours from Purlfrost - very simple to apply and we're really happy with the results - they allow in plenty of light and afford us all the privacy we need. We've just got them on our lower panes of glass and even with blinds covering the upper panes of our windows, we still benefit from a lot of light.

I did this on a previous property and got the window film from Ikea.

It was pretty easy to apply and still let plenty of light in.

I've used film from Purlfrost too - it's good quality and lasts.

Hi Sunny;

 I used this kind of plastic film on a toilet window, and beside the privacy point, it’s very good to “hold” pieces of glass in case of someone throw something against the window. Obviously it not avoids someone who smashes a window to come inside, but…

Considering the light, you will have a little less light coming in, but will be a soft diffuse light. It isn’t bad at all. I think that works great. It’s easy to apply (you just need to take care with air bubbles between the glass and the film). I did it myself, but it was a small window, I think that to a bigger one will be better ask help for someone who works with it. Anyway, overall it’s a good option, and if you change your mind, you can just strip it off…

You can get spray-on frosting - this quick search shows examples. You'd prob need to mask off the surroundings, that's what those obsolete printed newspapers are for. It will wash off if you change your mind or get it badly blobby.

We thought about this but didn't do it, mainly because I didn't like the idea of permanently not being able to see out.

We went for Venetian blinds, am really happy with them. Ikea do some that are really reasonable, in various colour ways. They are very long but can be cut down.

Good luck with the decision!

We bought some white blinds from IKEA, has a similar effect- mail me and you are welcome to come see.

We got ours from www.windowfilm.co.uk which offers lots of different types of patterns (if you do want to be able to see through like Alison P), or plain, and they're very easy to put on (and take off if you change your mind)

Brick up your windows and save on the window tax.
