Free festivals this summer.
As soon as the sun comes out we all need to get outside, listen to some music and wear our rainbow jumpers, don't we?
Here's a couple of local festivals to be going on with:
Stoke Fest
Stoke Fest takes place in Clissold Park, Hackney and in 2008 hopes to attract between 20,000 and 30,000 festival goers. The line up for this year's event is yet to be announced but if last year is anything to go by then visitors can expect DJs galore, performances from some of the hottest bands around, world music, circus performers, plays, local bands and artists with plenty of arts and crafts to keep the little people happy.

RISE
The Rise Festival in Finsbury Park 13th July brings together Londoners for a day of music and entertainment in July. The main message of the days events is that London is united against racism and that we can live together in harmony in our capital city. Thos festival is a huge affair and attracts big names in music, last year the likes of Kelis, Jamelia, Skatalites and St. Etienne performed while the ace Bill Bailey had people laughing in the comedy tent. 2008's event promises to be just as good, so check website for line up details.

Thanks for this Liz. Used to go to the old Stoke festivals which were great. I heard last years one in Clissold Park was packed. Unfortunately the Rise Festival last year was rained out. Hoping for a better summer!

Went to both of them last year and yes the stoke fest was very busy, especially the kids stuff (surprise, surprise) and the food stalls but it was nice to sit in the sun. And, yes, the Rise was a washout and we had to retreat home because being eternal optimists we had taken nothing for the rain except a tiny umbrella but not before seeing St Etienne. I also went to a music event at the Coin Street festival last year that was really pleasant too.

Yes, Coin Street festivals are normally good. They seem to do one every other weekend in the summer.

Rise was great last year, apart from the rain. The Skatalites were awsome!

Stoke Fest is happening on Sunday June 8th from 12pm to 8pm.
Events will be kicked off with a procession down Stoke Newington Church Street led by Barking Bateria samba band.
The six stages at the festival will be hosted by Hackney Globetrotter (Russ Jones), and Global Local (Chris Tofu from Continental Drifts), Raison d'etre, Folk Stage with Magpie's Nest, and English Folk Dance and Song Society (where I sat last year), Solution Sound and Gladdy Wax, Sunstone Community Stage (a special outreach project with Afro-Reggae and Taru Brazil working with five local primary schools and at-risk youth) and Core Arts.

Africa Day is taking place on Monday May 26th from 1pm to 8pm
Free festival in Trafalgar Square celebrating African culture: the music, dance, arts and crafts, markets, food and drink.
Performances from Les Amazones de Guinée, Bassekou Kouyate, Kanda Bongo Man, Busi Ncube, Emmanuel Jal, Inemo Afrobeat Experience, Kaago Drummers, Black Eagles Dancers, DJ Rita Ray and DJ Eric Soul.
There will also be stalls selling African art and crafts, fairtrade treats, information on travelling to Africa, a food village and drumming workshops for kids.

Even now I can't find anything on the web about Rise 2008. It's all 2007, including your link.

On the blog, the writer says that City Hall were unable to confirm a date and given how big it is, they would know by now since it takes a lot of organising. My gut feeling is that there will be no festival this summer.
