Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Ok, a request for information. I posted some time back trying to see who might be intersted in harvesting fruit from fruit trees on the ladder.

I would like to now see where there might be fruit trees to harvest from that are not being harvested and may be just going to waste. If you have a fruit tree in your garden that you would be comfortable with a group of folks coming over to pick from then please let me know and I will pop over, have a chat and explain what I hope to do with other like minded people locally.

Broadly, the owners of the trees will get first dibs on anything picked, the pickers then take what they wish and if we have any left hopefully we can find some local groups that can take the fruit, charities etc.

Also, if you know of any other fruit trees, perhaps belonging to neighbours or if one back onto your garden, please let me know. I hope to approach the owners to discuss harvesting with them.

What I hope to do is build a map of fruit trees, and especially those that the owners are open to us harvesting from, so that over time we can make sure this fruit does not go to waste, and (I hope) we can make some cracking local produce!

Thanks!

This is a really good idea. I was at St Annes hospital yesterday and i saw lots of fruit trees but the fruit (apples cherrys etc) had just fallen to the ground to rot. When i asked a passing bloke in a suit about it he told me that because the hospital property/grounds were being sld off and turned into residentials they decided not to spend money on maintaining the trees as they were to be chopped. Anyway i think your idea is really good because we are going through some really hard times and harvesting fruit that would go to waste seems so simple and logical. I would be inclined to leave some on the ground for wild life.

I picked fruit [apples and plums] in St Annes a couple of weeks ago, like I have before. Not all the trees are coming down, negotiations are going on about how many, some have TPO's on them anyway. Alex Fraser, haringey's hard working chief tree officer, knows what's happening. Urban Harvest help co-ordinate fruit picking off street trees and in people's garden. And bring any windfalls to be crushed into juice on Apple Day Oct 20 at the community hall in Weston Park Rd
