Ridiculous!

Although I am a little excited to see that this year Lindt are selling chocolate teddies as well as the traditional reindeer!

Well, we're past the equinox, so we're now in the run-up to Christmas. I believe at one time it was religious festival rather than a marketing theme.

Equinox is the 22nd....

what a boring git i have never met in my time on hol

make one misstake on spelling

and their you are

never meet me for a chat on life

I think that 21st December would be a reasonable time to promote Christmas stock!

What happened to Halloween and Guy Fawkes night?

You're right on the money on Guy Fawkes Night, Madeline. A proper traditional British festival, penny for the guy and all that, couple of Catherine wheels that refuse to spin, rockets that fizzle out in the bottle, damp leaves on the bonfire refusing to light, and, of course rain. Supermarkets should have the decency to wait until after we've enjoyed all that to put out their Christmas rubbish. But as for Hallowe'en - awful imposition from America, not a proper British thing at all, lot of nonsense about little buggers going door to door trying to blackmail us into giving them sweets. I say, get rid of it. Whatever next, are we going to celebrate Independence Day? It's bad enough we have to watch that dreadful film about it. Bah, humbug!

Yes CF - up with Guy Fawkes Night!

And, safe to say we won't need to cashmob Sainsbury's!

You are so right on that, Pete B. Sainsburys and the others are mobbing us for _our_ cash.

and by the way, as I've just posted on another thread, if people want a change from the big supermarkets, check out Expa on Philip Lane! Amazing place. Saucepans. Beer. Olives.

Hallowe'en was observed in Britain from medieval times but was discouraged in England after the Reformation. It survived in Scotland and Ireland and was taken to North America by the waves of settlers in the 18 th / 19th C. In the 50s, in Scotland, we used to go round the doors in scary costumes ( guisers ) with turnip ( swede for you English  ) lanterns.

It's not an American thing at all except for the trick or treat aspect.

Yes, there I was pushing my trolley past the Pannetone and Christmas Puds and another customer exclaimed, "oh no not Christmas ALREADY".  I agreed but we checked out the Sell By dates, The Pannetone was Jan 31 2013, but one of the Xmas Puds was 2014.  Now I know you can keep a good booze-soaked pud for a year or so but ...

As Madeline says, we haven't had Haloween yet, thanks America for this one, nor Bonfire Night, perhaps we should put all the Christmas stuff on the bonfire ...

The choccy teddies and reindeer 2 for a FIVER!  And I see my favourite BITTERMINTS, the posh ones have gone up over 3 years from £2.99 to way over £4.00, that is a RIPOFF!

Gawd, am I a curmudgeonly old misery?!  (Is that the right spelling?)
