Thank you for looking at this petition regarding the Earl Haig Memorial Hall on Elder Avenue, Crouch End, N8.
You may not be aware, but Antic Ltd, an owner of pubs across London is currently applying for a late-night and alcohol license for the Earl Haig Memorial Hall, Elder Avenue, Crouch End. If successful, the pub would be able to stay open until 01.30 on weekend evenings and play live music until 11.00 and recorded music until 01.00.
Many local residents are very fond of the Earl Haig Hall and a local consortium tried to purchase the property from the British Legion so that it could be used by the local community. Unfortunately, they were vastly out-bid at auction earlier this year by City and Westminster Developments (CAWD) – a property developer.
Haringey Council has maintained throughout that the property must be kept for community use and not as a residential property. Because of Haringey’s planning restrictions CAWD are now trying to cut their losses and sell it on to Antic.
Should Antic buy the property, they will re-develop the site as a pub, next door to the Queens on Elder Avenue, a residential street. There will be an increase in noise and rubbish, especially for residents next door and across the road, and no doubt another pub will have an impact on local parking. Many local residents have young children and feel strongly that the last thing a residential street needs is a pub.
The council must find a solution that benefits the local community and the hall, but another late-night drinking venue is not the answer. The council must also spend time consulting with local residents to ascertain what they would like to happen to the Hall.
If you wish, please sign this petition and send it on to anyone you know who lives locally who might also object to the license application. Yes the Earl Haig was on for £750K and a local consortium raised the cash to buy it. But in a fit of madness CAWD bid over £1m and won the auction, unsurprisingly! Therefore they paid way over the odds and ane now looking to get rid.
As I read it, they are not asking for planning consent but for a drinks license.
I agree. The consortium should say the offer is still on the table, assuming it is.
What's worse than an old building on a quiet residential road? - A late night pub with loud music and the noise of late night drinkers ,shouting, smoking outside on the street and then more noise as they are leaving. Last orders at 1am and then leaving even later after drinking up time. All this right outside your house. As other pubs close (The Queens at the end of the road), more drinks at the Earl Haig! Nothing wrong with a pub, unless you live next door like I and my close neighbours do. This is a quiet residential street, the last thing we need is a late night pub closing in the early hours of the morning with the noise, possible fights and rubbish and the late licensing acting as a magnet so close to your door step. Please sign the petition as I honestly think this is madness, the building doesn't even have planning permission for this use. Please object to Haringey Licensing before the 28th of this month.
I'm not an expert, but if you check the planning use classes you may find that the permission it had for the last use also covers the building's use as a pub. This works for other classes. For example planning permission for use as a bank also covers use for a premises as a betting shop.
I thought banks WERE betting shops these days
