Time for a Harringay Cafe with a difference - Repair Cafe?
Repair Café is a community project first developed in Holland, which encourages people to repair, reuse and recycle their possessions to reduce waste and reverse the rise of a disposable culture.
London’s very first Repair Café was held at The Goodlife Centre in Waterloo back in July. Visitors brought all sorts of items to be repaired; Victoria brought along a wallet to be fixed, Georgie’s bike had suffered a puncture and was quickly made good, Sue can entertain a full house now her dining chair is back in one piece, and young visitors Felix and Frank repaired their much loved toy box. Other items that were brought in for assessment and repair included wonky umbrellas and a toaster. Everyone that came managed to fix their stuff, make friends and have a great afternoon.
I've hinted before that through the GLA funded project on Green Lanes, we may (MAY) be getting a space in the heart of Harringay that can be used as a community/pop-up space, at least temporarily. It would be ideal for Harringay's own repair cafe. How's about it folks?

Sounds like a great idea, would certainly please my wife to force me to improve my DIY skills and on the flip side stop her throwing away stuff- Perfect.
Can we suggest ideas to the GLA funded projects committee or such like?

Yes have signed up to Thegoodlife they do some groovy courses. Broken lives that takes a bit more but perfectly possible

Repair Cafe is a great idea! As a life coach I could help with some broken lives too! : )
AJ England, perhaps we should open a different branch - a broken lives repair cafe? How about that??

Great idea! Rushy Green Timebank have been seeing a lot of success in developing the 'Bring and Fix' concept. It's a great way of getting the community involved in skill-sharing and resource-saving (http://rgtb.org.uk/bringnfix/index.html)

This is a terrific idea. We could fix and repair stuff that was going wrong, rather than throwing it away. And, given how much stuff is thrown out in this area, we could even club together to repair stuff and then donate it to charities etc that pass it on to people who can't afford to buy new things. I find it gives me a big boost any time I can manage to fix something myself, a real sense of pride. I think it would help all of us if we could get together, share skills and tools etc, and repair household "stuff".

The fix and repair shop already exists- see what the good people of Raise My Voice Foundation are up to and you will see my point , maybe they're at early stages but they are just getting on with it. They should win an award for preventing landfill and revitalising the area in one go- economic regency and everything! Next to Baldwins well almost

What RMVF are doing sounds great. I'll have to pop in again some time.
The repair cafe concept is slightly different in that it gets people doing stuff for themselves as much as possible and also brings locals together who may not know each other.
Perhaps RMVF could be local hosts, if they have the space?
