Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

I'm incredibly curious as to what happened last night. There were fireworks, then some time later there was some kind of a protest pretty much outside Green Lanes overground station that blocked traffic and seemed pretty angry. Did anyone else see this? Any ideas what it was about?

It dispersed as quickly as it started, I really want to know what went on!

Were there any flags etc?

That's a bit of a crap photo but yeah. There were two flags, can't remember what as on one of them but the other had a yellow background with a moustachioed man depicted on it. I think the other was yellow and green?

As I thought, that'll be a group from the Kurdish Centre - see here for a bit more. You'll probably recognise some of the flags in my video. Googling will readily give you more info about their cause.

Yes, it was the PKK flag (the green one with yellow sun and a red star in the middle) plus flags of Ocalan.

They came up Stanhope Gardens and blocked the traffic outside the Old Ale Emporium and Barclays.

Got pretty heated, a van forced its way through and they were kicking it and hitting it with bottles.

Was very heated, lots of angry chanting.

Some of the "protestors" seemed to be filming it. Presumably it is on a website somewhere now if someone knows how to search for it in Kurdish.

it seems to happen every couple of months. I'm not sure if they are really responding to some events in Turkey or whether they are just showing the local businesses their manpower and "authority".....I'm nto sure that an 11pm protest in an out-of-the-way corner of north London is a effective way to put pressure on the Turkish government.

They ran away up Stanhope Gardens after about 10 minutes- I assume someone had called the police.

The junction of the Old Ale Emporium seems to be their favoured spot - it happens every couple of months either late at night or on Saturday afternoons (unlicensed ones- there is the odd planned and police escorted event too). Have they got a base up Stanhope Gardens?

Ah brilliant, this is exactly the sort of information I was looking for! I only just moved to the area so I'd not seen this happen before. I got a bit worried when they started attacking that van, but it seemed to fire up and then die down almost immediately.

Ps I mean "out-of-the-way corner of north London" in an affectionate way, of course.

Hugh, if you know some people at the Kurdish Centre, do you think you might be able to ask them to explain why these late night "protests", which are quite intimidating, are necessary?

I've dropped them a note and invited them to comment.

Stan, you don't need me, you're doing just fine on your own! Sod having a PC view, this sort of behaviour is just selfish and creates no sympathy for their case whatsoever.

I wonder if any local councillors are reading this and taking note. It might be good for them to know more about what is happening. There are ways and means of airing voices and protests and having consideration for local residents should part of that. Plus taking account of the laws etc. What were those lads who rushed out and then so bravely rushed back to the centre trying to achieve?

Politicians? What about the police? Didn't someone get done for stealing a bottle of water in last year's riots? Is there some sort of cultural defence of "We do it this way at home" going on here?

I wonder what is going on.

August 15th is an important anniversary for the PKK (Kurdish Worker's Party). It was probably that.
