Ramadan
Hello all,
I live on Clyde Circus, near to the mosque on Clyde Road.
Last year during Ramadan we found the noise of people arriving (and leaving from) midnight prayers to be a real issue. People were talking outside the house for some time before and after prayers, parking outside the house and revving their engines etc etc.
I emailed the mosque last year about it, asking them to ask people to be quieter when leaving but heard nothing back.
If it was a pub or club I would have done exactly the same, or complained to the council, but Ramadan does only happen once a year and I don't really feel like it is a council matter.
Has anyone else had a similar issue or do people have any suggestions as to what I should do next? I can't put up with a month of going to bed at 1am!

Surely noise is noise and if a venue is causing it then the Environmental Health need to deal with it.

Absolutely. Any premises should make sure that it's patrons don't disturb the peace of residents. It might be worth having a word with one of your ward Councillors now before Ramadan starts to see if a dialogue with the mosque might help rather than it turning it into an enforcement issue. Maybe we should all join the fast this year. From July 19th it starts at 4.24am and ends by 9.07pm. but by the end of Ramadan you can eat by 8.20pm. It's tough being a good Muslim so far north of the equator when it falls in the summer.

I think your email would not have been ignored as they often announce to the congregation to be very aware of the neighbours of the mosque and to be as quiet as possible when coming and going from the evening prayers. Emails can be overlooked so I'd advise you to telephone and speak to the imam to ask that the announcement to be extremely considerate of the residents nearby is repeated every evening of Ramadan. If you call you will hopefully be reassured that they will remind the mosque users. There are always many more worshipers than mosques can adequately house without car parks and unfortunately this can't be rectified in such a densely populated city. Positive dialogue is the best way.
