Decoding Haringey recycling rules
Hi All,
Sorry if this is a really dumb question but I wondered if someone could help me decode the recycling system of Haringey Council. Having just moved into the area from Hammersmith where everything is just dumped into a single bag, this is quite a step up.
I contacted the council when we moved in and received:
- Food caddy
- Garden refuse sack
- Dry recycling big bin
- Dry recycling small bin
- Food waste small bin
- Normal bin
and was told to separate the waste into:
- Food (no bones or cat litter)
- Dry recycling
- Non recyclable waste
The Food waste and the non recyclable waste has been taken. But for some reason the dry recycling hasn't. We've got plastics and papers etc all together in the big green bin but loose (i.e. not in separate bags). I've looked through the bin again and can't see anything that shouldn't be there and the day for recycling collection seems to have passed. I've tried calling the council and emailing them but so far no response.
Any kind thoughts from the stalwarts on HOL would be most gratefully received!

We got a separate Food Caddy and Food bin where we are putting our white sacks. It may be worth a call to see if you can send one out? We dropped the council an email and received a complete refuse set within 24 hours so perhaps their service has improved (?!?)

Hi Helene, If you haven't already done so can I suggest you contact Veolia direct. The main number is the "Veolia Contact Centre" (020 885 7700) or Email: enquiries.haringey@veolia.co.uk
According to the frequently asked questions page on the Council website there's "a team of officers who can discuss individual circumstances with residents . . ." so you could ask to speak to this team.
By the way, people shouldn't assume that posting a comment on HoL will automatically reach either Haringey staff or councillors. Also can I suggest that you copy in Cllr Nilgun Canver as she is the "cabinet member" whose remit includes waste collection. nilgun.canver@haringey.gov.uk
I live in Haringey's far east. So still to come and pleasures prove, as Veolia doth old bins remove.

Do you know the official start date for emptying your dry recycling bin? These were distributed a couple of weeks ago but we were told in the accompanying leaflet that the new scheme wouldn't start until the end of June. So we've carried on putting our dry recycling in our green boxes for the moment. Mind you, we then saw the absurd sight of the collectors emptying the contents of both our boxes into the new green bin and wheeling it off to the van! Why don't they just let us use them as soon as they are delivered?

According to the guys collecting on our street today, they start collecting from the new green bins next week.

And what about garden waste (grass clippings etc.) - our big white double-handed sack has mysteriously disappeared around the same time we had our new green waste bin delivered (the smaller 120l variety, which is very smart by the way). Not sure who to blame - the high winds or Veolia....?!

Those 1/2 metre cube sacks are perfect for growing potatoes in. That's where they go.

We ended up in the situation where our new green wheelie bin was overflowing because we, like many others, hadn't received the leaflet and the recycling hadn't been collected for two weeks.
After a conversation with a lovely, rude lady at the call centre and then another with a manager, we eventually had a bloke turn up to empty the green bin. He told my wife that out of 45,000 bins delivered across the borough, 38,000 are already being used before the collection service has started.
I pointed out to Haringey/Veolia and would like to again that they've missed a few tricks with their change-management:
- Put a sticker on top of the new bin stating when it should be used from
- On following collection days, check if the bins are in use and drop in another leaflet if so.
OR, better than all the above:
- On the last day of the green box collections, deliver the new bin and remove the green box. Easy peasy!
According to the chap who made the collection, Veolia had wanted to put stickers on but Haringey vetoed it as a waste of money. What a surprise!

Well, the leaflet says new GREEN lidded bins will be collected from next week. Eg, starting Monday 18 June. And every week thereafter.
Old grey bins are every other week with Monday 18 June being a YES week.
Compost should be every week and should have been continuing every week.
I spoke to Veolia today and they confirmed this schedule, the one published in the leaflet ("Changes to your waste collection service"), is still the schedule they are working to.
No doubt someone has already said this but if you have two (or three?) of the large green lidded bins in your front garden, get together with the other residents in the property and agree that anything that can be crushed/broken down before going in the big green bin will be... then you can get Veolia to take one away IYSWIM.
Also, not wanting to make more work for Harringay Online, could there be a tiny calender on the site somewhere showing the bin schedule??? For some reason I think more people would look at it and it would be simpler to understand if it was here, rather than on Haringey Council/ Veolia. Why do I think that....?
