On my quest to discover places to enjoy eating near where I live, I decided to find The Step café on Myddleton Road and was greeted with a street which now unfortunately resembles a ghost town. Approaching the street west of the High Road, a 5 min walk through what seems like just a residential road, soon allows you to enter a part of the street which one can imagine was a destination area for shopping/going out for anyone living in Harringay back in its heyday.
The Step café is an absolute treat and a must visit. It’s a café which caters for breakfast and lunch for some and an evening hang out for others. It also acts as a gallery for local designer-makers and has started holding specific events which adds a more interesting dimension to what we think a café’s role is and what it should provide. Using a space more creatively by opening yourself up to more opportunities is what seems to be the future of cafés going forward. I tested out the hearty vegetable soup followed by the even more filling lamb stew. My better half started with the black pudding scotch egg which he thoroughly enjoyed and then mimicked me by having the lamb stew as well. Service was just right, warm, friendly and attentive. We will be re-visiting soon, but after checking out the dubious looking Mum’s lounge further down on the corner.
We took the opportunity to stroll down the street and peer into abandoned shop windows. It felt like a shame that although the street has not fallen into total disrepair, the shops on this beautiful arcade have still been forced to close for whatever reasons. Original Edwardian features are still very much on show and one closed store even retains a window display of mouldering Men’s underpants! Where is Mary Portas to polish this secret gem? Better still, anyone looking to open a new business in the area should take up residence here on Myddleton Road, reclaim this street and make this Edwardian encounter the hot spot for Wood Green.
This street will definitely see a revival, it's just a matter of time.

On HoL's sister site Bowes and Bounds Connected you will find many of the same mind - a group of Bowes Park locals are working to try to launch a Saturday street market as part of an effort to regenerate Myddelton Road.
We're very happy to recommend B&B since we help set it up! Richard and the team have done a marvellous job there.
Thank you for the suggestion. Have just been reading the posts on there. All very exciting for Wood Green and the surrounding areas. With Harringay Market opening up soon, we'll soon be spoilt for choice at the weekend.
I've been to The Step as well and it is great. They will be stocking more Designer Maker wares soon too so great place to get a present or card.
Yes, very nice! Thank you.
We went to the Step Cafe. Lovely food! Even the very amateur service did not spoil it for us.
As for the crafts? - well £145 for necklace was out of our league.
Recommend it!
