Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Warning - Scammers offering to collect household rubbish on the ladder

My housemates were duped into a man who said he was from the council, and offered for £10, (which he said he would give to charity), to take the rubbish away that we currently have in our front garden from a big basement clear out. My houses mates were both really busy at the time, so didn't think the wait till the rubbish had gone before paying, so parted with a tenner.

The man then put all the rubbish out on the road presumably for 'collection' but he didn't come back. We also noticed at learst one other house with rubbish on front, suggesting they had also be dupped.

So just to warn people, make sure to not pay anyone for anything until the job is done!

A similar scam here recently in Dowsett Road N17. The rubbish was moved - just one street away!

Another scam on the Ladder was filmed by John  McMullan last year. In the first case, enforcement staff were able to trace the rubbish and interviewed a householder and a local business under caution and fines were paid.  In the second example - thanks to John McMullan - the builders were made to pay.

So my advice is don't agree to pay anyone unless they are a licensed waste carrier.

Absolutly Alan
All people are doing, by paying cash inhand for waste removal, is for it to end up as street dumps?
The guys collecting it dont care where it goes?

Then we all have to pay for its removal through our Council Tax then.
Its not that hard to call the Haringey Council Veolia Contact Centre on 020 8885 7700 or email them at;
enquiries.haringey@veolia.co.uk

and get it collected legally and it will end up where it should be and not in our streets?
They collect most items for FREE now and it will be recycled too? so no excuses

Hopefully Danielle your flat mates wont be silly enough to be duped again?

Was this a Nigerian guy wearing a florescent raincoat and a purple cap similar in colour to the one used by the current rubbish collectors? He knocked on our door and asked about a few bags of rubble. He is quite plausible and said he was waiting for the lorry to come up the road. He wanted us to put the rubbish on the road for collection.

I thought this was a bit suss so I asked to see his ID and was amazed when he produced a very official card. It was a Home Office temporary admission card for people who are claiming asylum. The HO has not issued these for a long time.

I know these cards so I looked closer. “Barred from working” was printed in bold so I told him to take a hike. He then started to shout at me – “Its because I black innit!  Oh how we laughed.
