The first ever Chelsea Fringe will begin on Saturday 19th May and run for three weeks, at a host of different venues and settings across London. It will feature a mixture of public spectacles, horticultural happenings and community celebrations.
The Fringe is a brand new initiative, entirely volunteer-run in its first year. It’s all about harnessing and spreading some of the excitement and energy that fizzes around gardens and gardening.
Entirely independent of the RHS Chelsea Flower Show (though acting with its support), the Fringe will range from grassroots community garden projects to avant-garde art installations.
Events currently planned for North London include:
- 1 ticket, 2 days, 212 gardens - A chance to nose around 212 gardens and squares
- Clissold Community Garden - Hidden permaculture garden opens its gates
- Front garden allotments in Finsbury Park - Islington front garden veg growing scheme
- Garden Art Exhibition and Sale - Innovative artworks by seven UK-based artists
- Jazz and Art in Canons Park - Walled garden celebrates its 75th birthday
- London Gardens Walking Tour - Take an epic 20 mile stroll through 700 years of history
- Meadow Up Your Street - Uplifting rivers of wildflowers will bloom in London streets
- Pimp Your Pavement – bringing life to our streets - A mapping project of London's most public community gardens
- Pop-up Veg and Flower Gardens - Gardens burst out onto the Mildmay streets
- Secret Garden Project: Bee Stop - A green roof especially for bees on hectic Holloway Road
- Secret Garden Project: HABITAT - A floating organic garden in City Road Basin
- Secret Garden Project: Spontaneous City 02 - A scultptural widlife friendly installation
- Secret garden projects - An elaborate and eccentric bird box of epic proportions
- The Bicycling Beer Garden - Interaction, cycling, recycling, fun and BEER
- The Blackstock Green House - Pop-up community space in Finsbury Park
- Travelling beer garden to tour the Fringe - Travelling garden with the boozey theme

Really interested in the front garden growing project. Looks brilliant. Anyone up for anything similar here?
I'm having a go at peas and beans in mine if I ever get the seeds to germinate and thinking of tomatoes too. I've already got rocket going on the windowsill and herbs, but its time to get more adventurous I think after reading this blog. I noticed a neighbour in my street has got some of those growing sacks and some beans started off and walking down a Ladder street (only I can't remember which one) someone has started a veg patch. Last year, I saw courgettes in Pemberton Road. Come on, anything Islington can do, we can do...too.
