Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

During a Twitter exchange over the past couple of days between @AbbiTownsend and myself, Abbi has raised the issue that owners may soon be required to keep their dogs on a lead on Parkland Walk.

AbbiTownsend@harringayonline legally 'the public highway' includes public rights of way i.e. those paths that don't have tarmac on, like@ParklandWalk

Re parasites in dog mess causing blindness:  for general information I just want to point out that cat mess is forty times, yes that's 40 times, more infectious.

Hi Philip

I commend all responsible dog owners of which there are a great many! Many owners in the scenario I described do make an effort to control their dog, but many do not.

I am an animal lover, I stopped eating them some time ago.  I just dont beleive that dogs have equal rights with children, which appears to me to be the implication of your bycyle in the park story.  My kids  were not born scared of dogs, as babies and toddlers they loved them.  But now they are, becase they have had severeal experiences were dogs have 'harrassed '  ( i cant think of a better word) them and I could not and the owner did not control the dog and make it stop.

As a result its now hard for me to teach my kids that most dogs are  either harmless or not interested in them (which they are) and not to be scared, because the next dog that comes near them could be the one that scares the life out of them.

Dogs are wonderful creatures and great compainions -  especially for Kids!  But in the park that I use, finsbury park,  its 115 acres with four small areas with dogs excluded and  reserved for kids.  Personally I'd rather see the it the other way around, the whole park for people with designated areas for dogs off leads.  I'm not expecting it to happen.

Here here, about time we reclaimed our open spaces and redressed the balance. I'm sick of having to protect my little ones from dogs running and jumping at them, is it too much to ask to be able to walk and ride bikes around our parks without being constantly on guard for wayward pooches?

There's a dog warden for Haringey - worth ringing him/emailing him?  He gave a presentation about dog fouling at the Stroud Green area forum a couple of weeks ago and he never said anything about dogs on leads on the Parkland Walk but he should know.  If the Parkland Walk is a public highway then would the paths in Finsbury Park be counted as such?  Sounds a bit unlikely to me and ridiculous if it is true.  the Parkland Walk is the best resource ever in this area.  i LOVE it - and most users are considerate of others - dogs as well as cyclists!!

Those who posted here might want to be aware that the consultation on this is now live.

I just tracked down what happened with this issue and found the results of the consultation and the implementation plans (see attached). It seems that Parkland Walk will not be affected.
