Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

I used to sit back and wonder what all the fuss was about with Virgin. I've had them for years from Telewest days and they've always been fine.....well HAD always been fine till about three months ago. Then things started to go badly wrong. I started getting continual speed drop-offs to unusable levels. I've made many phone calls - frustrating ones with the poor sods in the Indian call centres that you can almost guarantee will get you nowhere - and hopeful ones when on the odd occasion you get through to someone who listens (usually seems to be in Cardiff or Liverpool, it seems). There's been an acknowledgement of a performance problem, but apparently no fix. I've had engineers come round. I've had a new router and things get beter for a while then deteriorate again.

Today the connection was worse than ever, barely strong enough to test teh speed (when I can it's .25MB on a 10MB service). So I called again. India again (sigh). I was told that my speed has been capped because of excessive uploading and downloading! This means gigs-worth of traffic. Whaaat! I've barely used the computer today. I know beyond any reasonable doubt that I haven't exceeded any limit. It's absolutely impossible.

It's sooooooooo frustrating.

So two questions. Has this happened to anyone else? Is there any point in changing ISPs. Are there more reliable ones out there?

This is a very good point. Our Wifi was having problems so I switched everything to a not very commonly used channel (because it won't do more than 54mb) and no more problems.

Hugh, i'm so glad you've posted this. i wonder if it's an 'area' thing (ie harringay area?) i have EXACTLY the same thing. about 200kb (when i'm supposed to get about 40 times that speed, about 8MB). i also use those speed test sites, and it barely registers. I have the same experience with the indian call centre people (HOW does one keep one's patience the 4th time you go back to square one and get someone saying' how can I help you today' and being oh so ever-so polite as if the only criteria on which we will judge customer services is on their OTT politeness rather than any change to the terrible service.I've had new wireless routers etc but alas - those D-link things they use just seem like a pile of plasticy cr*p.

i'm wanting to get out of virgin but i have not yet been with them 12 months. i hope to get out on the 'lack of service' proviso

Honestly Mark, going through the charade is the only way to force them to upgrade their equipment and the pipe they own outside our houses is the best internets there is (and well they know it of course).
Except its not the best there is if you get 200ks ! You'd be better with any other provider.

Have you tried complaining to Ofcom ?
I agree with h4k - it might be the hardware under the road that's the cause but the main prob is its so temperamental. i just got 4000+ just a minute ago but then i might do it tomorrow and it'll be 300 again..
Since I moved to the ladder I have had Virgin and it has been fine until about a month ago, now the download speed is a crawl, I'll try that useful number and see if it gets me anywhere..
I got all this 150 VM call drouble and change to BT.Most frust was whit Billing,as 200£ get lost,no my Bank has to sort this out!Vigin accept my cancelation and promist to refound the last month payment in 4-5 weeks!!!If I to this the will charge me 10£ late payment!
