Harringay online

Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

So, go on - what do you think of the new design folks?

Thank you to those of you who came on to the beta site and gave feedback on the design as it was developed.

Birdy has done an enormous amount of work on this and spent an enormous amount of time - he even contributed some of the photos up top. So thank you Birdy.

We've tried to design it so it's clean, crisp, usable and modern, but not corporate or anonmymous. It's your site too. I hope you like it. But tell us all what you think. I can take it!

Hi The site is great

btw re our street and all that I run a group for women on the ladder but I am not sure how I can promote it to encourage new members. We meet at my house its all been word of mouth. You may have a suggestion!!

cheers
Helen, you could create a group on the site. You could then post events and relevant discussions there. It enables you to message all the members of your group with updates or news, useful if you want to keep something between the group. If you start a discussion/post info in the group, it will appear in the latest activity but only if you post a reply to your own discussion...just a few words like 'do you agree? or something. You can also pop invites on people's pages to tell them about the group. That often works.
Love the photos revolving up top.

Just who is that man feeding the swan ....

P.S. If you put 'Harringay online' into Google you get the council's website no.1. So what next for HOL? Harringay People magazine?!

Of course if you search 'Harringay ning' one will still find this site.
On Google Matt, if you search for Harringay, you'll find that this site comes up at around number 5. It takes one helluva lot of work to get it ranked well. The science behind exactly how search engines rank is kept deliberately vague by Google et al. I'm trying to find out how to accomplish a name change with Google but I'm reluctant to charge ahead without knowing what I'm doing and so lose the excellent Google ranking currently enjoyed by the site.

In the meantime if you enter harringayonline in Google you get one entry which is one of my Wikipedia entries on Harringay which lists this site as harringayonline and so brings you straight here.

If you think about what search engine ranking is for, it's about helping people find the site. If people know that there's a site called harringayonline, they should be able to find it. If they don't they'll probably search on Harringay. So whilst it's ideal to have the search engines find us on both sets of search parameters, if it's a choice between the two, I think it's more important to have us well-ranked on a Harringay serach rather than a harrringayonline one.

Oh and the guy feeding the swan was just some Eastern European guy feeding swans in Finsbury Park one day last summer. I know nothing more about him.
I'm just trying a cheat on the Google search engine - if you enter the old tag line, "Connecting the residents of Harringay" into Google (including with the inverted commas to denote find the phrase exactly, you will get this site listed. So I've just cahnge it to "Harringayonline - Connecting the residents of Harringay". Let's see what happens next time Google indexes the site! (only does so very few days/weeks).

But thanks for rasing the issue, Matt. That was helpful.
Since writing this I've changed the name tag to Harringayonline and for the time being the site's come through the Google serach rankings unscathed. But, it's all a mystery to me. So I take nothing for granted.
Yes, it's VERY nice. I like it a lot.
Thanks John.
Splendid job chaps. Love the photos in the banner.
We are very lucky to have this facility in our community. Well done for keeping it updated Hugh. Btw, have you got an archive facility on the system? I would be really interested in keeping the responses on "gating the passage" for potential research, if everyone was okay with that?
Thanks Colin.

What do you mean by an archiving facility? (You can tell I'm learning all this as I go along!)
.... back room (?) :)
