Going south from Warham today - Pemberton has one bed receiving TLC and one still to do, Mattison looking good, Duckett has old municipal plantings gone a bit off, Cavendish oh dear, Burgoyne let off as they have no planters (although plenty of room for them) and Umfreville - my street - appears to have several crab apple trees growing in the planter amongst other things. I think we could pitch in and make this all look a lot nicer.
I'm willing to work on ours if anyone in the street fancies joining in: a bit of pruning and tidying and a few new plants should do it.

That sounds nice. Going North along the pasage from Lausanne to Turnpike Lane this evening I made six reports to Love Clean Streets.
I've always thought that, especially in Summer, the spots where the passage meets the road were crying out for "proper" street furniture rather than just gardens. Every once in a while it would be nice to find a stone table with some elderly Greek men drinking Ouzo and playing Backgammon.
what historical quirk is responsible for my road (Burgoyne) being the only one without a planter?
I went to Columbia Road flower market last weekend and picked up two boxes of marigolds (twelve plants) for a quid as they were closing up about 1.30pm.
Hi Sally
Burgoyne never had planters, only low walls. They were removed, I believe, to cut down on the amount of dumping and anti-social behaviour that occurred around them. The road does have ample space for planters though :)
There are a fair few roads that don't have planters. It may have been down to the individual developers many years ago i.e. those who built Pemberton and Mattison built planters, those who built Warham, Pemberton and Hewitt, for example, didn't bother. The planters are nominally looked after by the parks dept but at a time when parks staff have been cut to the bone, its a reasonable thing for residents to adopt them and make them beautiful. It would be great, for example, if we did a big bulb 'bomb' in October in all the planters that do exist currently.
Pemberton is looked after and we have started the process in Mattison which is now looked after by a couple of people in the road and the school gardeners. I agree about Cavendish but most of the planters just need a bit of tidying. Umfreville planters are rather lovely even if they are a bit unruly.
If you do decide to have a go, put a call out to neighbours in your street for plants. We found people were pretty generous and it only takes half a dozen people to pitch in with a bag of bulbs or a tray of busy lizzies for the space to be filled. Choose a time and a date and advertise here and see who shows up. 3 or 4 people can make short work of sorting out a planter. Contact Andy at the GRA if you need tools, they have a tool bank.
