Have just read this and am suitably insensed having spent a very pleasant morning guerilla gardening. Would that we were lucky enough to have an allotment I'd be rightly up in arms. There's a petition to sign.

The Department of Communities and Local Gov have (unusually apparently) issued the following statement:
The Department responds to the claim in the Independent on Sunday that the review of local government's statutory duties could threaten the future of allotments.
A spokesperson for the Department for Communities and Local Government said:
"This is simply untrue we will not remove statutory protections for allotments or any frontline services. However the Government is reviewing old and unnecessary duties imposed on councils in order to free them up from Whitehall red tape and as part of this we have published the full list of duties which includes allotments."
So all's well, although Planning Blog does muse
While the statement will no doubt be welcomed by campaigners, the department’s promise that it will not remove protections for allotments begs the question why these duties were included on the list of more than 1,200 duties in the first placeso it may not be the last we hear of it...
