Can I please urge everyone who is concerned about cleaning/refuse collection to use the report a problem page to request clean ups (even if you have to do it every day for a while) and write to your councillors expressing concern. There are currently excuses being offered about the 'changeover' to Veolia and some may try and blame the cuts - Veolia is a private company and should not be affected by the spending cuts.
If councillors don't get the complaints directly, they are unlikely to act (with notable exceptions). You also need to give them some ammunition to complain with; drawing their attention to this thread might be a start.
I am about to fire up a couple of letters both about bins not being emptied and the rapid deterioration of
park cleanliness. If you feel the same, please join me...and take photos!
re park cleanliness, see my message added to this thread a few hours ago. I don't know how to link directly to it, so I'll re-paste the text here:
I spoke to a council worker collecting litter on Duckett's Common a week or so ago about the state it was in and he said that two of the parks cleansing team had retired a while back and because of the cut backs they hadn't been replaced. He said there used to be 6 of them for the whole borough but now there's only 4, so it was hard to get round all the parks. He also said it's likely to get worse as lots more parks staff are going to lose their jobs.
I went to Downhills Park at the weekend and the litter was terrible, worst I'd seen in years.
You get what you pay for
Haringey as a Council is cutting Basic Services
While Still spending Fortunes on other projects
Like continuing it's Expensibe Junction programme of pavement Cushions which cost many thousands
per Junction - which can Only really Benefit those that are building them
And I will bet that none empoyeed on doing them live in the Borough
Once again, I'd urge people to sign the parks petition here if you're concerned about the state of upkeep in green spaces: http://www.minutes.haringey.gov.uk/mgEPetitionDisplay.aspx?ID=13&am...
The council will have to do something about this (at least in the parks; street cleaning is separate) if enough people sign but it's got precious few signatures on there at the moment. I'm sort of surprised by this going on the amount of complaints that pop up on HoL!
As far as streets are concerned, I'm almost afraid to say it but the amount of litter in my part of the borough (the much-lamented East) has definitely reduced since the change-over to Veolia (sp?), at least around Seven Sisters Road, which used to depress me on a daily basis. Long may it last!
