Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Councillor Dogus - why is Ducketts Common looking like a rubbish tip?

Councillor Dogus,

As councillor responsible for parks, can you please explain why Ducketts Common, the gateway green space to the borough's main shopping area, is looking like this (emailed link to this post at 14:50 Friday 25/03/11). Please don't mention 'cuts' in your answer. Thank you.;

Good work with the Common is going on through the Friends Group, Groundwork and the council to re-develop the playground and replant certain areas. But it's blighted by this litter, bins overflowing and a general lack of care.

Can you guarantee a plan of action so this doesn't continue to happen Dilek?

Hear hear
I hope the council does!
I was thinking the same thing myself this week - it's in a right old state. Actually, all the bins around Turnpike Lane seem to be overflowing and the surrounding streets are as filthy as I can remember them being. Pretty grim and depressing.

We have seen nothing yet.

Excellent photos Matt. I day dream of poisoning those pigeonsrock doves.

Biarrrely, my parents, who are staying with me at the moment, haven't stopped ranting about the disgraceful dumping of huge piles of bread on Duckett's Common every day by some moron trying to feed the pigeons. Good photo of the mess above, though it's usually a higher pile and turned to soggy mush by the time I see it.

Anyway, they were walking through the Passage today and struck up a conversation with none other than David Schmitz, who happened to be going their way. Having taken the full force of their flak about Ducketts Common (but the bread dumping in particular), he promised to look into it straight away and speak to the police. So if you're reading this, David, please let us know where you get to.

clay pigeon shooting session may be a Borris initiative in the near future. Alternatively, for a fee, the country side hunting estates need work;

Might need to apply for MtD monies. Oh no, that's been cut as well.

We can only blame the council to some extent. Many streets are regularly strewn with rubbish, mine included, because people are too lazy and filthy and anti-social to take it home and throw away or find a bin that isnt overflowing. Why should the wall in front of my flat be a place for anyone to deposit their empty cans and take away containers? Why should motorists be able to drive down any street and literally dump anything they dont want onto the street, or in the park or common or anywhere. Too many people simply dont care about the rubbish and the dangers that it poses let alone how unsightly and offputting it is. Who would want to go and sit on Ducketts common? May as well go to the council tip which is probably cleaner.

Excellent point. Very often, one sees a street sweeper busy at work on one end of the road, whilst at the other end, someone else is casually discarding their crisp packet, take away litter or cigarette end on the pavement. Unless there is stricter enforcement, better education & pride in where we live, nothing will change....sadly. Very often the pavements look like giant ashtrays.

Perhaps litter louts could be forced to spend a day, working with the Council's street care teams using proper hard bristle brooms rather than those 'almost dainty' hand held picking devices!

can we include the pigeon feeder on Seymoure here, or is it Zam's replenishing their stock.. sorry, off topic.

Unfortunately too many people are totally thoughtless (kind description) when it comes to rubbish, and they need either "sticks or carrots" to change their behaviour.

When will we get around to reintroducing deposits on drinks containers to make them returnable?

I was in Finland this year where they have significant deposits on all cans and plastic bottles - its amazing to see how little litter is around - I even saw the drunks collect up the empties for the refunds!!

Waste packaging needs to be reduced and controlled on all fronts but it can only really happen with Government leadership.

hi all

Good work Matt. But I also agree with Ruth. The council need to keep those bins empty, so that we can happily fill them again. They are patently not doing this on Ducketts Common, and they could do more to discourage the pigeons and their human friends.

But equally, good lord there are some messy arrogant selfish so-and-so's living around here (and that's the family-friendly version of this sentence). They wouldn't put their rubbish in a bin even if it trotted after them within easy reach. I don't know what anyone can do about this, realistically. I was in a bad mood once and picked someone's litter up and tried to give it back to them... you can probably imagine the response. I think I'd start with Primary School education, and give up on the teens and adults as a lost cause. And don't get me started on the dog shit!

Having said that, Downhills Park was actually looking pretty nice the other day.

I once did this Pete, hand back an empty coffee cup someone threw on the pavement. I wrote about it on HoL in fact and it started a big rubbish debate.

The response I got from this late middle aged guy when I confronted him was not exactly friendly.... Like I was the mad one and he was good/sane one. Clearly the enforcment and imposition of fines isnt happening either. Certain lamposts regularly attract piles of rubbish, like smelly and surreal offerings to the god of lamposts. It aint nice...
