out of interest was there a similar event on march 1st for st. david's day? and will there be similar events on april 23rd and november 10th to celebrate st. george's and st. andrew's days respectively?

No Ed, there won't. St Patrick's day has the monopoly on getting plastered by 11am, get into the spirit and stop being so piteously envious of other people's fantastic cultural baggage. This is also suspiciously close to the Spring Equinox so is probably an old pagan party, all dressed in green, with some Church appointed representative in Heaven to look up to from the gutter.

 

St George was Turkish and a bit militaristic for peaceful revellers, St Andrew was Greek and surpassed by Robbie Burns and St David was, although Welsh, probably tee-total and not worth raising a party over.

St George was also the model for the chivalrous knight, bashing the peasants by day and paying court to other people's wives of an evening. Wonder what kind of event the library could put on for that? I prefer May Day as an expression of English identity and our hey nonny no

Ed, I think you'll find St Andrew's is November 30th, not 10th.

I can never understand why the English haven't canonised St Will the Bard, to take over from George. He did die on April 23rd, same day as his contemporary Cervantes.

Pádhraig Mac Calprainn (Patricius filius Calpurnii) was of course an old Roman Brit. Trust the grovelling Irish to make a big fuss and throw a party for any invading Brit with an empire to build. I had just booked a long weekend in Ireland to avoid the forthcoming royal nuptials when I found that my lickspittle arselicking compatriots had invited the Germanic Queen over for the month of May. Next time I'll head for Libya or Kazakstan if she promises to keep Andrew at home.

I don't know what events are planned that far ahead. But I do know that if you volunteer to put something on, the librarian is likely to be very pleased with your suggestion. It's all about getting involved with the fabulous library and helping to increase footfall. 

I'll be there on Thursday and despite my perhaps misleading surname (and the fact I've just finished knitting a shamrock badge) I'm totally English (Midsomer Murders here I come!).

The original post does start off by saying 'Everyone is welcome' and it's true, everyone is.

Go on, be Ed O'Gorman for an hour or two...

There were craft activities for St David's Day and I expect there'll be events planned for the other days. The library tends to use all sorts of 'days' as a way of getting footfall. All events in all libraries are listed here monthly
