On Wednesday last, MPs's voted on whether or not to demand a rethink of the government's plans to sell our forests

This vote was not binding - it was an "opposition day debate".

In short, Lynne Featherstone voted yes to the policy as it stands and David Lammy voted no to the policy as it stands.

Will you've had me enthralled and wondering if you had a ghost writer. Well, up until you neglected to use a capital letter for the Swiss and Portuguese. I hope they're not offended.
I disagree, a private company are answerable to the shareholders and a return on their investment, just like so many companies that have taken over public sector areas the service is compromised for profit. Isn't privatisation suppose breed competition, as I cannot see any in our rail services, maybe you can point me in the direction of this like for like competition on the west coast line?  I don’t like privatising everything as it’s a short term, pawn shop style way of financing the country, but I am not against some of it if it breeds commercial competition which benefits the customer. The way the franchises are distributed on the rail network means this isn’t the case currently.

 

You obviously mingle with a different type of person than me, most of the folk I know who frequent the rail network (social and professional) are not happy with it, the way they monopolise their turf and rig the ticket systems.

 

I am travelling to Dortmund by train next week, I shall report back of my experiences.

 

 

@B2 I thought you were perhaps in HH for the postponed match on Saturday..

London - Brussels - Cologne - Dortmund - Leverkusen and back again on different trains, all of which I have been on before - fantastic and great value. Of course to watch St Pauli and no I will not be there to watch H$V smash the town up : )
Sorry to go off on a tangent, Will, but some of your remarks lead me to think you have a bit more experience of public transport than just being a rail buff. Just curious, and you don't have to say, but did you work in the industry at any point?

Yes, but the London System is so restrictive (and very overpriced) - starting-up very late, especially on Sundays.. The Berlin U- & S-Bahn systems and to an extent Hamburg And München run a 24h service at weekends and public holidays.. Easter being a great example, with services starting at three on the thursday before and running continually until 1-2 on the following Tuesday.. 

 

I tried out the new Met S-stock when it was in Berlin at InnoTrans last September.. They are OK = V.good  but certainly not the best on the market.. Typically LUL - very staid and generally reliable!

Would not the majority of the train journeys pre-privatisation have been south of the Thames too ? It doesn't affect the argument that there are, overall, many more train journeys across the country than there were before. Liz was asking for an example of increased performance post privatisation. There you have it.

 

 

@ James - I don't understand your point but I certainly wouldn't like to have had appendicitis in the time of Henry Vlll. Life is definitely better.

but you mentioned train mileage and percentages UK > France. What I'm saying is.. if you were trying to impress how many more journeys(trains) there are in the UK, then the metro and RER must also be included.. we don't know if they are.. 

You're right Stephen. The second and third sentences are redundant in terms of this discussion. It should have just been the first -

"This record performance was delivered with well over a million more trains per year running on the rail network today compared to the days of Railtrack and British Rail."

I wasn't actually trying to compare apples and pears.

railways are just more interesting than bloody trees.. 

This might sound OT at first , but the Int. Berlin Film Festival starts tomorrow.. and someone. just  as a bit of fun and a word-play put this 'work of art' in the Tiergarten.
