Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

These are the proposals I have seen designated for closure over the next 6-18m, It is at the consultation stage, although I know since this list was disseminated, a new list has been drawn up with some changes, including more closures. SO Im basically saying dont take this as in black and white, but it does give a good sense of how dramatic all this is

WITHDRAWAL OF MANAGEMENT FROM ELDERLY AND DISSABILITY PROJECT AT CYPRIOT CENTRE-

The reason I know about these changes is because I was myself a patient in Alexandra Road crisis centre over xmas which is one of the planned closures. I am personally horrified by this closure alone as it has provided a vital place for people to go in mental health crisis. This keeps many people out of hospital, which often results in lengthy stays costing much larger amounts of money. It provides a sancturary for hundreds of people every year, and hundreds more phone access in a crisis 24/7 (and saving the council money in the long run, something they dont appear interested in)

I have personally been admitted there on a number of times over the years I have lived in haringay, and it has served as my life line. I am able to spend 1-2weeks in there, whilst still going to work in my role as a qualified nurse. This place is not a luxury but a safe place to stay alive until the crisis passes. The staff are very experienced and well qualified unlike many of the psychaitric nurses on the wards I have been on. Of course not that there are many wards now anyway, as most of them have been closed down with nothing new being put in place

So if you have mental health problems, basically your stuffed

This is only my story, Im sure all the other hundreds/thousands of people in the Borough affected by the above proposals, will have their own story. These services dont win votes as do lovely luxuries like park renovations

Dear Karen, I really despair at the proposed closures. These services have been built up over years by dedicated staff to meet a real need in our society. As you say the cuts make no sense as these centres and services support people and their families so that more costly intervention and support, such as expensive, long stays in hospital, can be averted.

Yet again it is the most vulnerable that are being attacked and cutting services like these make people feel even more vulnerable, insecure, and isolated. These cuts will really effect the lives of many people. When the elderly are moved from one home to another a percentage die and others become more confused. Without day centres and clubs people become isolated and deteriorate. Without drop in centres and phone access for acute problems the situation deteriorates leading to more costly support. These centres and services exist because there is a real need for them, this hasn't changed. I think these cuts are miserable.

I like the way that they're sometimes referred to as vandalism. Quite appropriate.
