Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

I have been a way for a few weeks and am wondering when the bellowing announcements emanating from Green Lanes train station began?

They are extremely loud and be heard from inside my house a few hundred meters away.

I am not sure if the announcements are coming from the trains as doors are open or whether they are from speakers on the platform.

Does anyone know of any regulation or policy in place to protect residents from this type of noise pollution?

All credit to our splendid Haringey librarians, Clive. But you may not have realised that my link was to a video on YouTube.

It's under ten minutes long. And there are several others with Prof Gaventa and some of his students at the Institute of Development Studies at Sussex University. It's an excellent example of an academic using social media tools to reach out to many more people.

Gaventa was a teacher and community activist in his native Tennessee. (I can't lend you my copy of Power and Powerlessness as I've forgotten who borrowed it!)

Do watch the video. And think about it in relation to some of the small local issues which come up on HoL.
I'm depressed.
Seems like we cant stop nothing- the betting shops, being screamed at by self service tills in supermarkets, in tube stations and now in your own home by station announcements. David Cameron wants to know what makes us happy- perhaps he should start from the other side, what makes us unhappy and go from there. Seems like there is no peace in Haringey. Nor anywhere else. Quality of life going down the pan and no-one seems to be responsible, or to have any power to DO something simple like adjust a volume control... duh.
May I suggest you contact the local papers. some of the journalist use this site. Admins may direct you towards the right person.
We got a phone message from the powers that be yesterday asking if the annoncements had got better. Apparently, someone specially came to turn them down. And they have. Bravo.
hi there! This is the response I got by email yesterday....

Dear Dr Cherrington

Thank you for contacting London Overground.

I am sorry that you have been disturbed by the announcements at Harringay Green Lanes station. We have recently installed a new system at this station.

I can confim that an engineer reduced the volume at the station on Thursday 2 December. Hopefully this has improved the situation for you.

If I can be of any further assistance please do not hesitate to contact me.

Kind regards,

So- people power can work!! Yippee!!
Yaay yaay yippee yaay; you've earned yourself a big hallelujah..........and it just so happens.......
Good result! I must say that since the improvement work I think the lighting is now totally overkill at this station based on standing at the bus stop opposite, what is it like in the surronding properties?
Yes, it has gone a bit Blackpool illuminations. It used to be so dark and dismal there and I wouldnt use that station after dark before it was taken over by London Overground and upgraded. Its much much safer now but I think the lighting level was ok before recent refurb. I will avoid complaining again tho in case I get banned from using London Overground!
