anybody know who owns this little fella?
he has been sneaking in our catflap...
and sleeping in one of our cat beds!
and has pretty much made himself at home!

That is so cute! I'm afraid one of my cats does that at the neighbours house. I don't know how to break him of it--except to keep him in all the time.

Yes I have a neighbours cat come to our house - unfortunately we have a magentic cat flap so he can't get through it. Instead, the cat smashes it through the door to leave himself a hole in the door to get through.
It's slowly breaking our door and cat flap (as well as terrorising our cats) but I'm yet to come up with a solution to the problem (any suggestions??). I guess it's a side effect of having cats and a cat flap.

Wow Sally, that sounds pretty hardcore! I know there are some automatic squirty things you can buy to keep cats away from certain areas. Maybe try that, and keep your own cats in for a bit so they're not scared off too? Or shoot the destroyer cat with a water pistol when he tries to get in? Does not hurt him, and he will most likely hate it.

ha ha yes it is quite hard core! :)
I have tried "shoo-ing" it away when i'm in which works. I have thought about the water pistol idea but didn't know if that bordering on cruelty to animals (if the wrong person sees me do it and reports me to the RSPCA!).
However, the cat often comes/breaks in when I'm out. Sometimes I come back to find cat hair all over the kitchen which means that there has been some kind of cat fight i reckon. It is a very large cat so I'm worried it could do some damage to one of mine. My cat has recently had cat flu which the vet said is often related to stress in otherwise healthy cats.
It is also unnerving when we are watching TV and hear the cat hammering at the cat flap! The first few times it happened I genuinely thought that there was someone outside trying to break down the door it was so loud!!
Another option would be for the owner to neuter the cat as the vet said that it woul be less aggressive then...not sure how i find the owner, or suggest this though....!
All somewhat amusing/hardcore/concerning....

We have a magic cat flap that reads the chip on our baby's neck before unlocking the door. Takes batteries, but they seem to last a fair while (6 months and counting)... It seems quite sturdy too, but it damned well ought to be for the price we paid (80 squids)! Not sure we've had any attempts to smash through though...
My bro's cat however had a regular cat flap fitted. Peeved with the mice he kept bringing back, my bro put it on one-way (out only), and came back to find that wee Jasper had smashed the door with his head so hard when annoyed at not being able to return, that he'd broken it in half, and had destroyed the locking mechanism. The repaired cat flap (lollipop stick braced door with electrical tape) cannot be locked now, and Jasper is happy once again. They still get lots of unwanted mice though ;-)
Using a water pistol is not cruel. We use it on our baby when he starts to climb the speakers, curtains, scratch my pile of vinyl, and so on... Not too often, but merely showing it to him now brings good behaviour. Was recommended by a vet once.
So Sally, I say lay in wait, and give bruiser a good squirt in the face should he try to get his ugly mug through your cat flap. It's only water after all!
And Andy, I reckon you make the investment and get the posh cat-flap that reads microchips before allowing entry. It's much better than the magnetic ones in my opinion as 1) loads of cats have those fobs anyway, and 2) if your kitty loses his/her collar, they can still get in with the chip reading one, whereas they cannot with the magnetic fob type.

Hi Sally, I can assure you a water pistol is not cruel. It might look cruel when you see their reaction, but believe me, it's fine, and it works. I have, like Joe, used it on my cats, very successfully. All it takes are a few squirts a few times, and they get the idea.
Cats learn by the immediate consequence of their actions, so the combination of hammering on cat flap / unpleasant water or scary shouting should stick after a few times. You just need to get your timing right.
Alternatively trying to track down the owner and discuss neutering might be a good idea. Neutered males have happier lives with less fighting, less injuries and less risk of diseases. Feline HIV being one of them. I am sure I can come up with more arguments if needed. :)

Change your cat flap for a cat mate one, if you don't have one already. Staywell doors are rubbish, if that is what you have. The cat mate superselective is pricey, but solved the problem of our neighbours cat sneaking in and peeing everywhere as it is specific to a cat. You can find them on Amazon.

i don't particularly mind him popping in for a bit of warmth or the odd scrap of food, but it's his tendancy to spray (which he now seems to have stopped doing) and the odd flea he wants to share with our cats that is annoying!
if no one owns him, i am quite happy to nip him down to the vets for a neutering and a defleaing.... but don't want to do that if he belongs to someone!

If the poor chap has fleas then he might have been abandoned? You could take him to a vet to see if he's microchipped. I assume he does not wear a collar?
There are plenty of idiots out there who move house and don't take their pet with them, leaving the poor little mites confused and looking for new homes if they're brave enough.
That said, my friend's cat was adopted by a neighbour, who did not realise he already had a home. The cat just liked it better at the neighbour's place. My friend only found out after a chance meeting. That cat did not have fleas though.

Thanks everyone for your thoughts and suggestions about my predicament. It's really appreciated. I may try to find the owner of the cat as I came home last night to find my little one with 3 bleeding scratches on his face - i think it was the result of a cat fight with this cat I've been speaking about...
