Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

The Standard reports tonight that hundreds of council jobs are at risk in Haringey:

"Councils in London are facing a jobs bloodbath, with thousands of posts being axed because of huge cuts in government funding.

"Lambeth could lose 2,000 posts, 1,000 are at risk in Haringey, and Brent is expected to axe around 350 jobs — having already lost the same number.

"Haringey leader Claire Kober said: 'The depth and speed of the Government's public sector spending cuts have put local councils under immense pressure to make urgent savings.

'It is not possible to remove upwards of £50 million from our budget without significant job losses. We will, wherever possible, make cuts by first deleting vacant posts, but further job losses are unfortunately unavoidable'."

We're sure what OAE means is that he can completely understand why people would want nice Xmas decs, but news likes this offers food for thought.

If all the over paid top council top brass helped out and took a paycut from their overbloated salaries then more jobs could be saved. ( Mr CEO on 250000 bloody pounds a year )
Stuart, the Chief Executive is on salary scale CEX. LBH supply/ied salary data in ranges rather than actual amounts. Salary scale CEX is a minimum of £175,724 and a maximum of £210,032. Whatever the figure in this range, it includes two fixed amounts: a London weighting of £1,734 and "consolidated allowance" of £2,489. (source: up-to-date FoI data

This salary is exceeded alone by the Director of Children and Young People, who is on a "Special Scale", reported in the press to be in the order of £210,000.

Both of these positions earn signficantly more than the United Kingdom's Prime Minister.

The cost of the top 10 salaries at LBH is approximately £1,339,000. The cost of the next 10 jobs is about £905,000. This includes the Head of "Communication and Consultation", who is paid about £87,000 (LBH supplies a salary range not an actual amount).

Doubtless, this latter officer had a hand in authorising the so-called consultation about shaping Haringey's Future. Was it just coincidence that, amongst the "choices" that the public was offered as services to cut, there was nothing included that was corporate?
Just out of inerest what would a fair wage be for the leader of a borough and the leader of the country?

Will, like you, I am waiting for LBH to scrap the almost wholly wasteful Haringey People magazine. But I'm not sure I agree about councillor pay.

I have come more to respect the job that councillors do. Its often thankless and the basic pay is not a lot. But its pretty important because without them, we would be entirely at the mercy of the bloated bureaucracy which would become even less unaccountable. It's sometimes said they are not allowed to speak out and defend themselves – but by the same token, they are not obliged to defend themselves – that job is supposed to be performed by the political class.

The basic pay of an ordinary elected representative is £10,500 and this compares with salaries of the higher permanent staff of between 10 to 20 times this amount. And its permanent and its pensionable. Is it any wonder that sometimes pompous permanent staff treat councillors with disdain? Where does real power lie?

Rather than seek a small symbolic cut to councillors' pay that will only serve to discourage others from serving, I would be more likely to question the sheer size of salaries of large numbers of permanent staff, together with the rafts of fringe benefits. All of which are paid for by taxpayers.
Clive , You can go on about how these salaries are formed but it still does'nt change the fact that it is out of sync with how ordinary workers salaries have gone up. It's top heavy and they can afford a financial donation to keep fellow workers. That's why our council tax has gone up 100% since the new labour project was disasterous formed.
