Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!
absolutely shocked!
I had to go to a main post office yesterday to do what i thought was a simple enough task
which required the clerk to check certain documents, what i was told by the said clerk has left me speechless!! " The passport cannot be checked because you are a FOREIGNER", am i being too sensitive here or is this normal behavior? incidently the passport is an irish one and irish do not require visa's to travel to the uk .

Well "Alien" is used by US Immigration (and a lot of others unfortunately ) for those entering the country illegally not usually a term used for people coming as tourists OR those living in the country on visas/married to Americans etc.

I lived in Japan for two years and was the proud owner of an alien registration card...although they allowed me to have my human picture not my true self the 7 foot lizard with 8 tentacles.

Was this for ID purposes? I think this is to do with having to have a UK passport as identity in this country. But come to think of it, what other documents would you be able to use? Incidentally what did you use as identity in the end as I have loads of furrin friends and it would be useful to know whether a furrin passport is acceptable or not?

It was for provisional driving licence and i thought rather than posting original doc's i would use the p/o checking service not realising they only offer this service to holders of british passports, i would have thought that any digital passport could be used as a form of id. but check first!

Here's the full list of documents you can use to get a UK driving licence.
I guess they can't verify non-uk passports in local post offices so they can only be used if submitted to DVLA. Here's the Post Office page on DL applications.
And here's the ID required in Ireland - nothing.
Are Irish DLs used as proof of ID in the same way UK ones are?

Yes I agree that is ridiculous. And what is more ridiculous and worthy of challenging is if they accept your Irish passport at the Driving Licence place then surely it must be acceptable at the Post Office. Barmy!! In fact I looked online about the requirements

Is the problem that your Irish passport is not digital?
Anyway all the same the guy should have explained all this - it's not because you're a foreigner!

I had the same problem several years ago, but thought I had found a cunning workaround by bringing my treasured Nuu Zulund passport into a DVLA office so that they could verify it. No dice. It had to be sent through to the DVLA central clearinghouse in South Wales. When I handed it over to the nice man at the DVLA office, he assured me it would be safe, and would be sent through their secure internal mail system.
Which I presume it was, but it wasn't returned that way, but rather by second class mail...
