Mice?
OK, it is that time of year when you start seeing a liberal sprinkling of mouce c**p in various parts of the house. It is not normally a huge issue (thankfully, and so far). However there are clearly a few runs where mice clearly like to route themselves. Some of these are connected by holes left by building works in cupboards where pipes run for example.
I guess first, what stratergies do you all use to keep these little critters out?
Second, what materials can you use to plug up holes the little fellas like to use, and where do you get it from?

It's worth checking the facts. The Council's website page on mice has some useful information.
It also gives the scale of charges. Treatment for mice infestation is not free; though there's a much lower rate for residents on means-tested benefits.
Oh, and a dead mouse behind the fridge - or even under the floorboards - can reek for a couple of days. So trap 'em if you can. I use traps baited with poisoned grain

Thanks, the bleach is a good idea from Linda. I had one under a fridge in my old flat and it was not good for 2-3 days, though the rat in the floor boards of the entrance was an order of magnitude worse for sure.

spray it really thickly and leave it there if it won't damage the surface it is on, rather than rub it in. it is worth a try and not too expensive or damaging like poison.

hi Justin. Spray bleach where they come in and go and you won't see them again! i use the flash spray with bleach and it always did the trick (other makes don't seem as potent). Linda

Just to put in a word defending traps! We do lots of the things suggested here (esp re crumb avoidance and wire wool) but every now and then one of the little critters gives me a heart attack as it scurries across the kitchen floor (always when I am carrying a full glass of something). So we put down a trap (always under the kitchen units) and within a few days .. well, you can guess the ending. Then it is all fine for a few more months.
Personally don't see it as being sufficiently as big a deal enough to justify getting a cat, with apologies to the many local cat lovers on this site ...

my 10pence worth...aerosol expandable foam from homebase in all the holes of your leaky Victorian house, - doubles as extra insulation too, excess foam can be cut with a Stanley knife and even painted. I also use one of those "electric plugs" (also from Homebase). I seem to remember someone disagreeing with me about the benefits of the plug, the last time I posted, but honestly in 4 years I haven't seen one!

The expandable plastic foam just doesn't work, they chewed through within 24 hours!
