Mice?
OK, it is that time of year when you start seeing a liberal sprinkling of mouce c**p in various parts of the house. It is not normally a huge issue (thankfully, and so far). However there are clearly a few runs where mice clearly like to route themselves. Some of these are connected by holes left by building works in cupboards where pipes run for example.
I guess first, what stratergies do you all use to keep these little critters out?
Second, what materials can you use to plug up holes the little fellas like to use, and where do you get it from?

We have a cat, so mice don't tend to come too close, but where I used to live, before said cat arrived, the mice hated peppermint oil - if you put a line of it across the entry point, it will deter them (though I guess if you do it when one is inside, it will not want to go out again?) As far as blocking up gaps, someone once told me wire wool is good as they find it difficult to chew through, but you have to pack it pretty tight as they can squeeze through a quarter inch gap.

I do always find it a bit wearisome that people with a mouse people ignore the advice to get a cat. It's not like you're going to end up with a cat problem.

I don't like cats- fair point I might like mice less, but frankly I will take the alternative... I guess the biggest problem with cats is the fact they end up c**ping in other people's gardens?!

Ours doesn't - he has FIV, so he stays indoors (and is a very happy cat). But then if you don't like cats, having an indoor cat means you see them more, so might not be a great idea!!

wire wool in the holes, traps down for the ones that are in at the mo, and a plug-in thingy to try and keep them away.
if only there was a way to keep the big black spiders away - it'd make me a very happy man!

Yes, wire wool was the thing that worked for us. That, and what my friend Dave called a zero tolerance attitude to crumbs!

They're coming from under your sink. Or under your bath. Or under your front door, possibly, if you are in an HMO.
Stop them getting in with a combination of wire wool and plastic sealant.
Traps and poison only kill the brave ones and the stupid ones.

I think they are coming in via the air holes in the cellar to be honest, one my list of jobs to sort... Wire wool. Thanks! Will give it a go.
What seems to happen is they pop in and I put traps down, sometimes I get one, other times the evidence trails off, indicating they might have left.

Don't bung up any air holes with wire wool - you risk getting damp in the walls. Put a fine metal grate of some kind across (front and back if possible); that should persuade mice they are not welcome (note that, in terms of grating, if you can get a biro through, you can get a mouse through).
Check under your fridge for mouse poo and clean it away every time you do so. Keep bunging holes until you have woken up for three mornings in a row with no mouse poo under your fridge.
At this point award yourself a malted milk biscuit in the knowledge that you have routed your foe.

Understood. One further question. I have what must be a vent (I guess) for the sewer that goes beneath the house and into the front. The vent is in the front space of the house just before the street. It does not have a grill on, any idea where I can get one as I am sure this will be a thoroughfare for some of our bigger rodent freinds too?

We used chicken wire on ours as we couldn't find a grill in imperial sizes.
