Status Dogs
Rob Curtis, Street Enforcement Manager and the chap in charge of the dog warden service came to Area Assembly to give us advance warning of a consultation (dreaded word) relating to dog ownership in the Borough.
The subject turned to the topic of Dog Fighting and Rob mentioned the Status Dog Unit, with which he works. I hadn't heard of it, so googled it and came up with a number of articles on it. This one in the Independent is a pretty good intro.
Surprisingly, in response to my question on what they planned to do about dog fighting, Rob said there was "no evidence" that organised dog fighting went on in the Borough. I pointed to the evidence of training in the parks, The RSPCA’s Harmsworth Animal Hospital, in Sonderburg Road, Finsbury Park reporting a rise in the numbers of dogs being brought in with injuries sustained from fighting and so on. He did say that if people had evidence of dog fighting they should report it to him.
I was also concerned that they seemed to be concentrating on the 'hoodie with a dog' owner and not seeming to acknowledge the organised gang element of the issue.
Anyway, will keep you posted when the information about the Dog consultation goes out should people wish to make comments upon it.

Is the reason Rob said he had no evidence of "dog fighting" because there were crossed wires? "Dog fighting" to me implies setting 2 dogs on each other and usually gambling on the outcome. I've not seen anything in the media about that being a problem in Haringey. The problem you refer to in the parks was dogs being let loose on trees, swings etc. in order to strengthen their jaws, sharpen their bite etc. I think that's about increasing the aggression of an individual dog for when it's set loose on someone (a so-called 'attack dog'), not dog-fighting. The resulting damage to parks is awful - the old swings in Fairland Park being a good example.

No, I made it perfectly clear that I meant dog fighting for money as organised by criminal gangs. The 'training' and the breeding of favoured breeds take place in Haringey. Ask dog walkers in Bruce Castle Park. Older men approaching them about cross breeding because a cross breed 'banned' dog is not illegal and you can breed in certain characteristics such as increased height. In fact, in Tottenham you may see banned breeds being openly walked, and not by a 'teen hoodie'.
One resident spoke to me after and reported fights that happened in St Ann's near her.
Rob did acknowledge that it 'may happen in Lee Valley', some of which of course extends into the Borough.

She did indeed make it clear - in initial response to the question, Rob went on about youngsters, "bling" dogs and the like, so Liz had to clarify the question. Couldn't have been any crossed wires.

My response to Rob's consultation will be to push for the Harringay Protocol on Status Dogs:
* only Status Dogs : Dogs with Attitude should be allowed in Harringay
* all status dogs should be of the Chihuahua breed
* no Chihuahua should weigh more than 2 kgs or exceed 20 cms in height (ear tip to floor)
* all Chihuahuas must be kept fit and healthy - their bark sharper than their bite
* where children and Chihuahua prove incompatible, the children will be placed in a LBH care home until their 18th year
* no owner whose Chihuahua is overweight, or dies before its 18th year, may keep a dog thereafter
* the advent of the Chihuahua will lift the weight of responsibility from Harringay Passage's Dog Fouling Operatives

Whats the law on the likes of pit bulls being on leads whilst on the street? All through the summer there was a lovely nasty looking pit bull going up and down Warham Road with its owner, with no lead (mind you the owner was on crutches and shouted abuse at his dog continually).
With a small child in tow I hated having to go anyway near the dog and thought , stupidly or otherwise, that these kind of dogs have to be on a lead??? Not to mention said dog sh*tting on the pavement! nice

I'm going to upset some folk but here goes... .. .
Interbred dogs i.e. 'pedigree' dogs are not true dogs. The only truly proper dogs are those that have crossbred. all others are freaks and abominations of nature produced artificially by man through genetic interference. RSPCA has spoken out against interbreeding because the animals can suffer health-wise, and is opposed to Crufts dogshow for this reason. It's very rare to see a proper 'heinz57' anywhere today because they are deemed to not be 'cool' and cannot be worn as a fashion accessory. Please don't jump on me.
