Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Hi All,

On my cycle home last night I was almost run over by a bus (a private hire vehicle). At the next set of lights I politely aksed him to take more care, he then threatened to run me over. Is this appropriate behaviour for someone driver such a large vehicle?

After numerous such incidents I now wear a helmet cam - so I have a video of the event here: Should I report this or would it be a waste of time? As far as I can see he's done nothing "wrong" as the traffic rules state that he should give a cyclist as much room as he would a car when overtaking, and if he'd only give a car 20-30cm then he's not broken this rule. Unless the threat of running me over is against the law?

John, the bus was driving, and then a cyclist throws himself in front of it...
Cyclists are not suicidal. Whatever you may think (in your new red car to hide the bloodstains).
John, the red does hide the blood very nicely. It's when they bounce off the white roof it gets messy! Seriusly though, the amount on bad cyclists I see (and narrowly miss) every single day is quite frightening. For me, anyway, being the one who would cause serious injury if I one day fail to second-guess their erratic moves. To quote a mate: Have you ever heard a car say "ouch"?
I;ve looked at the video and it raises several points in my mind:
1) someone who carries a permanent video camera to record incidents is perhaps either incident prone or tending to paranoia?
2) i cycled from various points around here (N19/N8/NW3) into the city between 1972 and 1995 so I know whereof I speak - the bus pulling in looks to me like a perfectly normal manoeouvre - part of the ongoing bonhomie between cyclist and motorist I enjoyed so much - what's to complain about?
3) Is that not a mysterious bus - entirely devoid of identifying marks - what does it carry? Illegal immigrants? Escaping bankrobbers? H940OPJ is how I read it - have we identified the owner? Do we believe the partially obscured yellow sign in the back window?
4) Would an accusation against the driver of a school bus put the kybosh on his CRB check?

I think he's accident prone, but he's not judgemental.
It's noticeable that both parties, cyclist and bus driver, talk about their " rights ". Nobody mentions road sense and consideration for others.
I personally don't think large dogs should be allowed to ride bicycles on the road, even if it's a talking dog with an australian accent.
adrian* just teasing you :-)
I use my car for everything and have been thinking for some time to ditch it for a bike.... Not sure now....
I agree it's way too scary and aggressive. As a driver, I worry about the cyclists along Wightman Rd especially on the bends. Do they know how vulnerable they are?
I hold my breath watching drivers trying to overtake cyclists on such a busy, narrow road

What an idiot that bus is 500yards down the road you would of been back in front of him anyway, tip when looking behind, look at the driver not the vehicle :)
