Bank of England Museum
Only just heard that the Bank of England Museum exists and thought that, especially during this school holiday period, I'd mention it to other users. Looks worth a look-in.

I've been there. Lovely little museum with a big stack of gold bars in the middle. Not a whole day out but worth a trip if you're in the area.

A couple of other suggestions - I went to the Markfield Steam Museum (Markfield Park, Tottenham) after seeing it recommended on this site and it was fantastic. As well as the museum, the park is also great, cafe is great and it's by the river.
The other day we had a 'big day out' to the Thames Barrier - it takes a while to get there via overground, underground, DLR and bus from Wooliwch Arsenal - but that's part of the fun and, once there, there's a small cafe and information centre (£3.50 for adults) plus great industrial river views! Then we walked 2 miles along the river to the Dome, passing an ecology park which would also be worth a look, time permitting, and then home on the tube.
Also got the tube the other day to Cockfosters - exciting for a child who has never been the end of a tube line before - and walked to the Museum of Domestic Architecture based on the Middlesex University Campus. Very small, very quiet and very sweet. Free.
Maze in Trafalgar Square also amusing though not time-consuming.

I visited as part of an Open House weekend a few years ago (18th + 19th September this year) and it was wonderful.
