Harringay online

Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Apologies if this is off topic or in the wrong place, but I wasn't sure where to put it.

I've lived in Haringey for the last three years, on Mattison Road and Fairfax Road for two, and now I live in Tottenham, near Downhills Park. I joined HoL quite a while ago, and I find it to be an invaluable resource - it's fantastic that the area has something like this.

I hope no-one takes offence at me asking about this on here, but my question is this: does anyone know of any other, similar local online communities around? I've seen one for Stroud Green, for example (stroudgreen.org). Is there one for Tottenham/Seven Sisters area? (I'm sure someone will suggest I Google it, but believe me, I've tried, to no avail).

This is not to detract from the value of this place - I think HoL is a fantastic resource, and I realise you do occasionally cover things in my local area - the Fair Deal supermarket, for one. And there was a thread about Seven Sisters recently. I just wish there was something similar for Tottenham. Or perhaps something could be incorporated into this site? (Although I understand the main focus is Harringay).

Good site but not web2 which is the crucial part of HoL.

And I missed St Anns from my list of wards, that is the logical third quarter. I thought West Green ward came closer in, was confused by West Green Road coming up to the High Rd. In a way it 'goes' better with the wards up north, round Spurs end. A NoTo site?

We should get on with making our own, HoL has its core use for the ladder area, any bigger and it wouldn't work so well, though HoL has loads of squatters like me. Look at their map of where people live. Time for UDI for Seven Sisters.
I am trying to get something going as well based on the "area of benefit" of Finfuture - roughly. This does include a sliver of seven sisters ward. I have started a discussion entitled "Finsbury Park Online"

At this point Hugh must surely be thinking along the lines of "imitation is the sincerest form..."
Ha ha ha, no... Hugh will be thinking "these people don't know what they're getting themselves in for"!
I think it possible, that if we ask him nicely, Hugh will tell us (what we are getting ourselves into..)
The point about critical mass is important, but one could imagine HOL spinning off "daughter sites" a bit like bees setting up another hive...
I have some Web 2.0 experience and would be interested in helping out. Please let me know if anybody decides to meet re: this.
Next week? (I'm away today)- meet in Fountain to start to see whats possible? Someone suggest a date after monday. Isidoris are you following this?
I am also in a bit of a no-mans land - on the N17/N22 Border - our area is imaginatively called Wood Green Borders....
in all honesty I have no idea which area I come under - I think we are West Green.
Our end of the Roundway is a little odd as we are halfway between Turnpike Lane and Wood Green, although I have a Tottenham postcode I don't really live anywhere near Tottenham.
Erm actually come to think of it I don't really know where we fit ...
I would like to see a Tottenham version of HoL - would probably use both
Hi all

I dont know of any Tottenham online networking. But there are around 50 local Residents Associations in htis part of the borough, many very active local Friends of Parks groups, and regular local skills sharing days organised at Tottenham Chances community centre by the Sustottenham group..

best wishes

There is a website "celebrating" Tottenham which has been advertised on lampposts her in Tottenham Hale. It's called, "In Tottenham".

http://www.intottenham.com/

The problem with this site, however, is that it's not a TRUE community site. It's backers include the developers of Hale Village, The council, CONEL, Spurs FC, and Lee Valley Park. My opinion on this is that it will be just a fad, and when they cannot find anything to add every week, they will just pull it.

I believe HoL covers Tottenham more than the above site.
I see its supporters include Haringey Council. Do you know what that support consists of Neville? Or perhaps Alan Stanton does?
I've no idea, Hugh. I'd never heard of it before Neville pointed it out. (Thanks Nev.)

As Neville says it's not in any way a community site. Instead we get a superb example of how not to do a website: treat it as an online version of the usual boring glossy leaflets that nobody reads. (Though, at least it's not a waste of trees.)

As for Council "support" Hugh, this seems to consist of supplying a photo of Ally Pally. (That well-known 'Tottenham' landmark.) But I very much hope that not a bean of public money is going into this website. I haven't seen the lamppost ads, but I'd expect Lee Valley Estates, CONEL and the others to be paying the usual rates.

I'll ask about both points.

(Tottenham Hale ward councillor)
