Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

A young man was trying to take some cash out this morning when all of a sudden the machine went to a blue screen , displayed SORRY FOR ANY INCONVENIENCE and swallowed the card.

Incredibly, some banks have replaced old reliable IBM OS/2 operating system running ATMs, with the third-rate M$ DOS "Windows" operating system. Some folk are gluttons for punishment ...
Anyone doing internet banking on the ""Windows" type of machine should note this item on the BBC which says inter alia,

The 100,000 Windows machines have been infected with a trojan known as Zeus, said Mr Klein.

... which refers to a huge botnet harvesting bank log-in details.

Owners of DOS-Windows boxes who are connected to the Internet (including at least Members of HoL) may be unaware that their machine has secretly been taken over by a remote machine and had malicious code inserted. This can include key-logging software that records the keystrokes of passwords as they are entered into ID and password fields and then reports this automatically.

Just one of the reasons why it pays to think carefully about one's choice of computer operating system.

Clive* You give the impression that this is a new phenomena.
I'm sure everyone knows that we shouldn't visit unsafe/unknown/dodgy websites or open unsolicited messages that could be infected.

... .. .He said victims' computers had probably become infected by clicking on a link in a spam message or by visiting an infected website. "It was probably a UK-specific website or a message sent out on a UK-specific spam mailing list,"... ..

I'm pretty sure we can all assume here at HOL that the trojan can't get in unless you invite it in that's why it's called a TROJAN. Your post gives the impression that simply being ''connected to the internet'' will allow the vuruses into our computers. (excuse me if that was not your intent)
Botnets are not a new phenomena, indeed it is thought that the main means of distributing spam around the world for years has been linked networks of Windows machines known as Zombies, where the owners' boxes are unwittingly used as relays

The trojan Zeus is not new, having been around since 2007 to be a threat to Windows owners who innocently "invite it in". "What is new is this report describing the extent of perhaps the most serious threat to Windows users on the 'net: having their bank details stolen.

I'm sure everyone knows ... I'm pretty sure we can all assume here at HOL ...

I'm not as confident as you James that this is true for all 3,140 Members of HoL who may not be as circumspect as you. It''s not something we can afford to be complacent about.

Firstly I only ever access the 'net with a UNIX-class operating system (Mac OS X), the same system on which the net was built. Second, I do so through a router. Further, I have access to a triple-A rated bank with the most secure encrypted Internet access I have come across, including a separate physical widget, necessarily used with each access. This would seem to be more than adequate and I wouldn't feel comfortable with anything less.

But after five years, and only in the last week, I now need to add part of the serial number on the back of the widget. I was surprised at this extra layer now needed but it illustrates how concerned some banks have become about security.
What ?
