Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

A few years ago I compiled a list of awesome things to do in Wood Green. I think I started with 10 and the list soon grew to 59 as people added to it with their own top tips for Wood Green.

Looking at the list I put together a lot has changed from the name and location of the bookshop, the shops that came and went and the groups and places that are either gone or undergoing re-development.

I thought it might be fun to bring the list up to date so I extracted 16 things that I definitely do when I go to Wood Green. Can we crowdsource a list as big as the last time?

Here's my starter for 16

  1. Read anything by Albert Pinching about Wood Green and its history - order from Hornsey Historical Society
  2. Buy a book, go to a reading, see art at The All Good Bookshop. This amazing indy bookshop provides cultural manna from heaven on a weekly basis, including comedy nights, spoken word and author talks.
  3. Wander around The Marketplace at the back of the Mall which reminds me of the Asian street markets I once frequented. It’s a good place for haberdashery. Get good Mauritian food, stock up on products from Eastern Europe,
  4. Look at the Montague Burton Building as you pass. See if you can spot the original villas above the shops at the Turnpike Lane end. Try and spot where the Wood Green Empire once hosted famous variety stars and the notorious accident involving a bullet and an American.
  5. Take a stroll through Noel Park Estate- a beautiful attempt to build decent housing for the artisan classes in a more philanthropic if no less class-ridden age.
  6. Acquaint yourself with the history of Shopping City and try to learn to love municipal brutalism - remember everything becomes old enough one day to be loved and most people hate new builds for the first 100 years.
  7. Go and see some street art without traipsing to Shoreditch - there’s the Shepard Fairey, located on the side wall of a local shop right on the corner of Langham Road and Crescent Road and the work of James Straffon
  8. Watch the basketball or have a go at the outdoor gym at Ducketts Common -this outdoor space gets more lovely as the years pass and there’s something really special about seeing it so alive with young people playing games and having fun in the sun. Join the Friends to help make it happen.
  9. See more free art at Wood Green Library: Genesis by artist Gitl Braun. This thousand fold magnification of an art restorer’s palette is permanently on display, seen from the Ground Floor.
  10. Watch Haringey Borough FC with your kids.
  11. Walk (or take a bus) to Alexandra Palace for events and great views of the city
  12. Eat Japanese food at Oita
  13. Stock up on supplies for the kids (or yourself) at The Works
  14. Browse the charity shops for a bargain.
  15. Go on a nature hunt in Green Gate Common
  16. Get a vegan Sunday roast, listen to jazz, attend a wellness session and much more at Karamel

Let's hear yours!

(Any negative comments about Wood Green will be deleted, as will irrelevant political tub thumping - its my thread, and I can so I will. Start your own thread if you've got something to say!)

Yes to the street art and All Good Bookshop!

I was lucky a few years ago to have a guided tour of the civic centre and it's brilliant 1950s architecture. It was also a film location for The Crown I think!

Did it include the rooftop along with the old rooftop caretaker's flat? What a perk of the job that must have been - amazing view across London; you feel much higher up than you'd think.

I would have included the Civic Centre which is a fine example of Modernism in Metroland but it's being redeveloped so, for now, its one for a future list

Thanks for these recommendations, Liz.

Pinching's Wood Green Past is still the go-to text on Wood Green. Sadly it's been out of print for quite some years now. A couple of years back I suggested to the Hornsey Historical Society that we seek to republish it, in part as a memorial to the author, but mainly because it is such a valuable text.

Since then we've been working on securing the rights and hope to have it republished this year, possibly in a digital-also or digital-only edition.

In the meantime, used copies do come up for sale on the internet. The same applies to getting hold Steven Denford's excellent Hornsey Past (though no reprint for that is currently planned.

I have a copy of Wood Green Past which I think I picked up in a charity shop but local libraries also hold copies of it, I think. It would be great to see it re-published.

I went on a walk with Albert Pinching quite a few years ago around Wood Green which is how I know about the villas, the Montague Burton Building and all the other history stuff mentioned above.
