Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

'Your Freedom' - "most ambitious online crowd sourcing exercise engaged in by a British government"

This morning the coalition launched a new website which they say is working towards creating "a more open and less intrusive society". The aim is to "restore Britain's traditions of freedom and fairness, and free our society of unnecessary laws and regulations – both for individuals and businesses."

The Your Freedom site site gives you the chance to submit, comment on, or vote for ideas about how we can do this. "Your ideas", they say "will inform government policy and some of your proposals could end up making it into bills we bring before Parliament to change the law."

So go play. Get involved.

I like the first suggestion on this site - repeal the Act of Union 1707. It's going to be fun for some civil servant to trawl through the public offerings.
And "Repeal the Law of Gravity " as being unfair to fat people :-)
"Abolish the witchcraft acts". I'd vote for that.
Hmmm, brave. Obama did something similar but even more open in an online town hall. Problem of course is who takes part is entirely self-selecting, so what you hear bears no resemblance at all to what you'd get with something more representative of the public as a whole.

There were nearly 14,000 comments to Obama's call for questions, and many of the most popular ones were about legalising cannabis. Which, what ever your views on the subject, is hardly the most pressing issue facing the US at the moment.
There are quite a lot of people who want to put me out of work by removing Government funding from Action on Smoking and Health. Apparently ASH is "a very dangerous organisation reminding me somewhat of Herr Goebbels in Nazi Germany".

I'm not sure all this freedom stuff is such a good idea really.

I quite like the idea of freedom to marry your horse, though.
To be honest Ian, you are just the thin end of the wedge. The rot set in when they took opiates out of kids medicines - Calpol just doesn't cut it - and stopped us housewives having a little laudanum when our husbands were out. While you're at it, what is wrong with brewing gin in your tin bath?
Ooo. Even better - a demand that the Government repeal the second law of thermodynamics. This would, among other things, instantly solve climate change since it would make perpetual motion machines possible.

One typically gloomy conservative commentator on the site has rejected the idea, saying that it would "end in chaos".
