Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

I think a number of us will have received a consultation letter today on the proposal to site bike hangers in a number of locations in Harringay including Duckett, Harringay, Salisbury, Seymour and Warham Roads and Stanhope Gardens.  I followed the instructions to the letter to get to the consultation site but the consultation features nowhere on it.  I’ve written to Haringey to alert them but wondered if anyone else had had any luck.

MICHAEL following your citizen’s prompt yesterday, the council appear to have updated their web page around eight this morning.

If bike hangars were a priority for the council—such as promoting their Borough of Culture 2027—then the Cabinet Member responsible would have ensured that the Consultation was visible by the time letters went out. Expectations are low and there is net-zero sense of urgency.

Evidence of the lower-priority for action, is that the hangar expansion was announced one year ago. However, the means are always there for big announcements. Their propaganda arm spoke of "racing ahead" with a "massive" roll-out of bike hangars and "closing in" on a target.

Overpromising and under-delivery have become a habit in this area.

More widely, bike storage is a necessary but not a sufficient condition to encourage cycling. It is easy to point to hangars as cycling infrastructure.

The hard part is making cyclists and would-be cyclists feel safe and comfortable on the mean streets of the Borough. long dominated by car-use. That is the real test.

As other Boroughs make serious progress, Haringey Council is doing little on the carriageways. Rather than "racing" ahead and "closing in" on a finish line, the council has not made it to the Olympics.

Disclosure: For many years, I have rented a slot in a nearby cycle hangar. I'd cycle more if I felt less unsafe.

Thanks for the heads up Clive

Without disputing your points about the priority given to cycle hangers and cycling generally, I have found with other consultations that are on appyway (eg. Disabled bays) where I have also received a notification through the door that there is a general problem.

The notification through the door arrived before the consultation was on appyway and the end dates were different (favouring the longer end dates once it's on appyway). Seems to be some process problem.
