Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

When we first moved into our house, we found a Kelly's post office directory from 1935 in the attic which I unearthed again today. It lists all the addresses in the then Hornsey borough and who was the head of household.

Our house was occupied by Arthur Jackson for instance. What is also fascinating is that there was a synagogue on Wightman Road (the current church opposite the mosque) and a lot of residents with German or jewish names living on the ladder (remember, this was 1935).

The unfortunate resident of 26 Priory Gardens N6 was one Mrs Hitler, who I'm sure changed her name by 1939.

If you want to know who lived in your house or anyother address in 1935, just let me know.

Census records would be a good start.  I think Hugh knows how to access excerpts.

Hi Michael, I love this it’s fascinating. Love to know who lived in our house, 139 Wightman Road, if you have the time please. Thank you.

It was Lucas Watkins at 139 with Richard Charles Duke at 137 and the appropriately named George James Whiteman at 141.

Thanks Michael. The name Watkins does appear on an old lease we have but refers to a lady, his mother maybe. I’ll have to dig them out and check the dates.

Hi Michael, we'd love to know who was at 50 Burgoyne Rd if it's on your list! Thanks so much :)

William Charles Mogg, who was a teacher of singing.

Hello Michael.........I hope I'm not seen to be chasing you up but this article is so very interesting and I'd very much love to know answers to my questions, if at all possible.  I have posted 3 comments to you, all 14th Feb, '25 (and yes maybe I should've been out wining and dining on that day).  My first appears on page 6, second on page 11 and last on page 14 (which you have responded to) so I'm wondering if first 2 have been overlooked or deleted somehow ?  Thanks in anticipation.  Not too offended if you impolitely tell me where to get off.  Thank you.

Sorry John.  I don’t get notifications everytime someone posts a request so it’s a bit hit and miss if I see them.  Could you repost your requests as a reply to my original post and I’ll see what I can do.

Thanks Michael I've now just seen your reply on page 5.

Hello Michael,

I'd be interested to know who lived in my house in 1935.

54 Beechwood Road, N8 7NG.

Thank you, Jane

Hello Jane.  54 was occupied by a Mrs Wright and your neighbours were John McConkey at 52 and John Richard Gilbert at 56.

Hi Michael, would love to know who lived at 97 Warham Road at that time.  I lived there from 1943 til marriage in 1968 Always fascinated by an archway on the other side of our neighbours, the Cooks.
