Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!
White Hart Lane Coles Park Market
This market has suddenly been closed after more then 15 years. It attracted hundreds of visitors, and many sellers, who have lost their income. Does anybody know if it is going to reopen, and what can be done ?

Thank you very much Alison. I am trying to find out how to make a complaint to Haringey Council, to support the re-opening of the market, but I can't find to whom I should address it...

Eubert Malcolm, Assistant Director for Stronger & Safer Communities, said:
“We have taken strong measures to combat the sale of stolen goods and this will not be tolerated across the borough.
“The sale of suspected stolen power tools has led to a series of complaints that have been made against the operation of the market at Coles Park.
“Residents have also expressed concerns around the commodities being sold on site ranging from illicit tobacco, perishable foods and the illegal street trading that it attracts on the public highway.
“The market had temporary planning permission which has now expired. Our officers have worked with the Coles Park management, who have taken the decision for a temporary closure from Sunday 23 June.
“The Club will then submit the new Planning application and offer conditions as to how the revamped market will operate.”

Reading this it seems the decision to close the market was taken by Coles Park management.

But it seems to me it is the Council that decided not to renew planning permission. I wrote a complaint to them, just to let them know there is someone who is not happy about it! Hope they'll reply.

Planning permission doesn't work like that Chiara. They received temporary planning permission allowing the running of markets. Temporary permission has an end date after which new permission needs to be applied for. It sounds like Haringey are expecting the new application from Coles Park, as owners of the site, to include measures to prevent future illegal trading - which sounds fair enough to me. I understand your frustration with the market suddenly closing but it really is down to the organisation managing the events to ensure that these abide with the law and to evidence how it is organised to ensure that happens.
I traded at a one day event in Broomfield Park earlier this year and the level of scrutiny and inspection (including proof that I had £2m of public liability insurance) was set out before I even applied to have a pitch and was enforced on the day.

I would have preferred some actual prosecutions rather than a shutdown. It's collective punishment.

Yes, they could have stopped the selling of illicit tobacco and "perishable" good easily, if they wanted to. And people selling outside as well. And I read on the Met Police website that they only found three stolen goods, out of hundreds electrical tools on sale.
