Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Yasar Halim's North Circular Road branch was last week fined £74,000 for hygiene and pest control  breaches.

Of course, that leads one to look at the Harringay branch. All is good with the bakery side: it gets a top score of '5'.

Oddly, the grocery side gets a  scary '1', with 'major improvements' needed in several areas. I guess the primary area of concern would be the butchery area and any shop-prepared deli items.

Yasar Halim issued a statement on social media saying that since the inspection in 2021 that discovered the breaches, they have made improvements and were awarded a 3-star hygiene rating in June 2022, a score which, as a frame of reference, is well below the five stars achieved by most Harringay local stores, with the exception of Tesco.

The "issues" in 2021 arose, they say, "due to factors experienced by most businesses in the country with the perfect storm of Brexit, the loss of highly skilled migrant workers, and the impact of Covid".

Yasar Halim second shorter statement regarding Enfield Council's posting.

I would like to point out the statement released by Enfield Council has inaccuracies, and it was reported very unfairly.

It doesn't mention that the inspection took place in 2021.

It doesn't mention we got three star rating on our next revisit.

It doesn't mention all the building improvements that we have made to prevent it happening again.

It was wrong when it said that we ignored them as we wouldn't have got our three star rating on our next visit from them.

It was wrong, and when they said I was found guilty, the actual truth is that we pleaded guilty as part of cooperating with them so we could resolve this matter quickly.

This is shocking and sad. The Harringay grocery store hasn't been inspected since late 2021. I would have thought Haringey council would have returned by now to reinspect.

Because we were in a bit of a pandemic the council has a backlog.

But the Haringey store has been consistently OK for years.

What's disturbing for me is that Yasir Halim put out a statement saying 'no customer's health was ever at risk' that's not for them to say. They should have apologised and promised to urgently address their failing...

Did any customers suffer any adverse effects?

Was there a sudden influx of patients in A&E having eaten an olive from Yasar Halim?

So many stores go through this - yet this site doesn't trash them.

Will this site be listing all groceries in Haringey with a 1 score rating?

Or just Yasar Halim - with undertones of racism again?

The Green Lanes one is not the Palmers Green one.

But it is a TC shop and I am guessing most ppl on here commenting are not?

Shall we talk rats by Sainburys? - No course not.

The Salisbury? - No course not.

Es, sorry to read that you're so upset by the publishing of this story. I did give pause for thought before doing so. Whilst it's never a good thing to contribute towards damaging a local institution like Yasar's, we can't shy away from awkward truths. It's better that people know the conclusions of a professional team dedicated to the public's health, than we try and hide it.

The fact that we haven't learned of any customer illness as a result of a poor score doesn't mean that it hasn't happened and isn't really the point. The aim of the exercise is to prevent any future health issues. FSA hope that by publishing the scores, they keep stores on their toes. The more we are horrified about a score, the more publicity that is brought to it, the better the system works.

You have a point about not focussing on one store, however. To correct that omission, I've quickly looked at the other main Harringay grocery outlets. The result is good news for all of us who like to shop locally,  All shops are rated 5, with the exception of Tesco that gets a 4.

In no particular order:

Some stores I may have missed (feel free to add them)  others are showing as exempt. The FSA website says.

There are two groups of exempt businesses which are inspected by the local authority food safety officer but are not given a food hygiene rating:

  • businesses that are low-risk to public health, for example, newsagents, chemist shops or visitor centres selling pre-wrapped goods that do not require refrigeration
  • childminders and businesses that offer caring services at home

Right - convincing story.

And when other stores have received one or below your site has commented on them?

Or YH Haringey is the first to have this?

I don't have an issue with you raising issues with health and safety.

I have an issue with this site only raising issues we should be aware of when related to Turkish/Turkish Cypriot/Kurdish businesses.

Your site has a history of doing that.

Always with some ridiculous fantasy about "TURKISH GANGSTERS" comment.

Ethnicity is not a defence!

it's also not a reason to highlight issues that plague other stores across Haringey for decades.

Do you understand the point being made?

You could publish the statement from Yasar Halim?

The relevance to the year 2021 and this being news now in 2023?

Since you are concerned with mentioning one business?

Yes, the truth can be strangely convincing when supported with evidence.

The story was published because it came to notice in the Enfield Despatch. (They have paid reporters; we don't), That explains the timing. You'll have to ask them why they only just picked it up. I imagine it only just came to notice.

None of that detracts from the fact that Yasar Halim got a very low score. I very much hope it has since been re-rated and that the store will prominently display their new rating in their shop.

I absolutely and completely refute your unpleasant allegation that Harringay Online has a history of only relating issues as they relate to Turkish owned businesses in Harringay. It is completely untrue. You don't have to take my word for it: the evidence is open for everyone to see. Please feel free to search the Local shops and Businesses Category. I'm afraid that I don't have time to do it myself, but a quick scan through 2022, shows one story critical of a local business - and that businesses was Sainsbury's. As to coverage of Turkish businesses, I found two: both were positive stories

There are very few stories about the whole of Haringey, since the focus here is Harringay.

Didn't we have a similar discussion regarding Rakkas?

The outrage over the so called anti social behavior?

Yet no one posted or picked up on those issues related to The Salisbury pub?

It is only an issue when related to Turkish/Kurdish/Tukish Cypriot businesses.
