Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

I just wanted to say how much I have enjoyed going to Beaumont Rec and Chestnuts Park recently with my toddler and dog. This time last year I remember being nearly hit by a car at the zebra crossing going into Chestnuts while I pushed my pram (terrifying). Now, it feels safe to get there and I'm happy to let my little boy roam in the park.

These streets really do feel like they have been brought back to the people. Wish it was the same on the ladder!

I certainly don't!  Cities require people to be able to get around easily by all forms of transport.  Making life difficult for people to go about their daily business is a deeply retrograde step.

Have you been to Holland?

Amsterdam is a terrific and well planned and run city where the bicycle is king. And it's a wonderful place to visit and live. The idea that we can't do something similar in London is absurd and only stopped by the lack of imagination and commitment shown in threads like these. In Amsterdam people can get around easily by all forms of transport: bike, their brilliant tram service and car. London also has its underground service which is a fast and convenient way of getting across the entire city. It's entirely doable, it just needs the will to do it. Hopefully the Ladder LTN will come soon, that will have a massively positive impact on my family's life. 

Yup although AMS is suffering from a lack of housing due to teh AirBnBisation of the centre. 
But London has so much going for it. People still take Uber even tho the tube runs 24 hrs on the week end!

This is totally comparing apples with pears! In the Netherlands, they've built cycle paths since the 1890s. Cycling accounts for far more journeys than in England (I think over every 4th journey) and has for a long time.

So Amsterdam and Holland's long standing policies of prioritising cycling and walking have been a huge success. While London's long standing policies of prioritising cars has resulted in congestion, pollution and poor health outcomes. Sounds like comparing apples with apples and pears with pears to me. Would you mind explaining your interpretation that these two things are so mutually incomparable? I'm really struggling to see how you got to this conclusion Tina. Both are western cities based on a river with a broadly similar demographic of residents and modern economies. Amsterdam, of course, is less wealthy than London so has less money available to spend on infrastructure. So they appear to have done much more with less. Surely we should be learning from their expertise and making our city a more pleasant and healthy place to journey through, rather than just deciding the two cities are incomparable?

No it is not. The difference is the Dutch decided to promote a different model not based on car dominance but various modes of transport and spatial use that gives the car in a lower priority. 
But they started  some 40-50 years ago. And they constanly review things as things are never static. The UK is just a backward place dominated by cynical self interested right wing Conservatives who do not give a shit about the country as a whole only their own ‘constituency’. 

I have to agree with you, Alice B. The roads are so quiet and safe within the LTNs - it feels like the beginning of a real vision (and necessary one) for the future of any city. Singapore is another place that is looking to dramatically reduce car usage.

Would like to echo this. I often cycle from Seven Sisters to Bruce Castle Park with my children on the so called "CS1" and most of the time you're playing chicken with speeding cars down narrow streets with parked cars either side - these last few weeks have been fantastic.

We use Philip Lane to get to Down Lane Park. Sadly, the bits where there is no bike lane have become even more congested and dangerous for the kids!

Sadly, the traffic is now at our end! Our school run is solely along boundary roads which means idling cars. Our school is on 2 boundary roads. No promised green screen in place. And funny enough I could just let my kids roam free in Chestnuts Park even without pushing traffic towards others. Wonder how this was possible?

« School run » May I ask if you are actually driving your children to a local school from your home close by?
