Harringay online

Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

I was just in Sainsbury's and after weighing some broccoli and thinking it was a bit pricey, I tried the other food scales.

Here are the results for the same piece of broccoli on the 3 sets of scales in the fruit and veg area.

Three significantly different weights ranging from 402g to 636g and the price 77p to £1.22.

Choose the wrong scales when doing your smart shop and your fruit and veg could end up being nearly 60% more expensive.

I demonstrated this to the Duty Manager , Rasel, who said there was nothing they could do but would raise it with their trading hotline. And of course, no chance of compensation for any potential past over charging.

All in all he didn't seem that fussed about it so I won't be holding my breath for it to be resolved in the near future.

Choose your scales with care kids.

Thanks. Amazing weight differences. Looks like the set of scales with the low weight is the one to head for!

This is covered by legislation and is a case for Haringey Trading Standards. See https://www.haringey.gov.uk/business/licensing-and-regulations/trad...

Information on making a compliant is at https://www.haringey.gov.uk/business/licensing-and-regulations/trad...

Agreed - weighing the broccoli on my home scales. the lowest / cheapest one seems also to be the accurate one. (400g vs 402g)

Unfortunately different ones are close at different times.

Have filled out form for trading standards

Yep that is unacceptable. Report to Haringey trading standards. By the way, where is the cheapest scale? :)

Have done.

Cheapest was the one closest to the garlic.

Thanks. Just thinking, is that scale the correct one, or is it that under-weighing? If its under-weighing then keep quiet and we can all get cheaper veg.

Checked on my home digital scales which seem pretty good.

The broccoli was 402g on the "correct" Sainsbury scales vs 400g on my home scales.

So yeah - I think that's right.

In comparison, the "worst" Sainsbury scales weighed the same broccoli as 636g

Sainsbury's Harringay really don't seem to care much in general do they. And after their on-line meltdown a couple of weeks back doesn't look like their HQ does either.

Unfortunately not. Cheapest one was the accurate one according to my scales at home.

As someone who works in food, Trading Standards care about this kind of thing a lot, so I think the manager who dismissed it will be in hot water!

I've filed a report with them. See if they come back.

I'm pleased to announce that as of Monday morning, equity and fairness once again reigns in Sainsburys fresh produce section.

I'd be interested to know whether this was my tweet to Sainsburys (they said they'd contact the store.) Or if the scales are recalibrated on a Monday morning by default.

What's for sure though is the Duty Manager's claim that "there was nothing they could do about it" doesn't seem very accurate.

I'll keep an eye on them to if they drift out during the course of the week which could be down to normal wear and tear.
