Harringay online

Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

William Griffin ran a watchmaker's business at 545 Green Lanes (between Hewitt and Seymour) from 1909 until the Second World War. I spotted this clock which is about to go under the auctioneers hammer this week. I'd make a bid, but for the fact that the side view photos suggests that it's 8 - 10 inches deep.

After the war the premises was split into two shops, a format which it retains to this day.

More recently, the premises above the shop was the target of a 40-string police raid last week targeting the use and sale of drugs.

Interesting. Whereabouts is the auction?

It's in Southend.

Sold for £50. Did it go to anyone local?

Not as much as I expected. I might have put a bid in if it had been in something easier to bid on.

Then you may be in luck' It seems the bid fell through and it's in the 12th Oct auction. You can bid online. However, they've put some new photos up and it looks to be in a pretty poor state (The most worrying is the second photo,  with the clock with the glass case opened, showing how it's been crudely screwed into the wood at some point). Even if it goes for the opening piece of £40, there's a 30% buyer's premium to add plus £50 transport. So, the least you'd pay is £100.
