Tea Bar Alley is one street built as part of an underground network in WWII. It's located under the Prudential Insurance building on High Holborn. The tunnels were designed as a air-raid shelter for up to 8,000 people, and as a possible last-ditch base for the government in the event of an invasion.
Passed from MI6 to the Post Office and then to British Telecom, who tried to sell the network for £5m in 2008, the network was a joint venture between the Home Office and London Transport.
