Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Took these photos an hour ago, Oakfield road N4. The protest is about whether the tree is damaging private property or not and should this perfectly healthy 100yo tree be felled.

Hi john you ask if i'd contacted C. Papparlardo. yes i have and i hope you will help by contacting her on our behalf. much goodwill.

I should contact the local Councillors. With the elections coming up I'm sure they will be anxious to help.

I hope we can save this fine mature tree!

What's the bet the council will fell it on Easter Sunday morning or something equally underhand?

What can we as residents do to protect the tree short of sitting in it for months?

I agree that it’s terrible that a healthy street tree might be felled but local authorities are put in this position by building insurance companies. The company says that a tree “may” be implicated in damage to a property. The local authority can deny it is causing damage and risk ending up in court and potentially paying the costs of underpinning/rebuilding if the case is proven or they can just go ahead with removing the tree without admitting liability. It a lose lose situation

thank you michael anderson. if i may respectfully make a suggestion. The local authority relies on us coming to the conclusion 'there's nothing to be done'. if they can plan to spend money to kill the tree then they can plan to spend to solve the problem. the salisbury hotel was saved i'm sure the same can be done to protect our trees. also i noticed that maintenance work was recently done to this tree. even though they knew they wanted to fell it. surely that money is a waste ? i hope what i'm saying doesn't sound naive or foolish because we've a duty to protect.

It’s not just happening in Haringey Jim.  When I worked for Camden it was the same story.  I’m not saying it’s right.  My house had to be underpinned because part of the problem was a tree on my property (I made the insurance company do exploratory work to actually prove it was the case) and the remedial works cost them (thankfully not me) over £70k.

michael, this tree is on public property. Insurance in UK should be like in Iran and other strict muslim countries where insurance-for-profit is outlawed. for instance, folk might be suprised to learn, that car insurance in iran is about £50 per year average.

I think there are some negative aspects to living in Iran.

The tree being on public land under the management of the local authority makes them potentially liable for the damage it may have caused

I agree with john and michael. but 'potentially liable for the damage it may have caused' isn't valid in my friendly opinion.
