Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

I do not have a problem with generally trying to make our area and City a nicer air quality to live. 

We noted with some amusement that both of our Daughters developed asthma while living in the west country. However, this condition greatly improved when we all moved to London.

The ULEZ box ticking exercise does not tackle the problem of high polluting vehicles. Most petrol vehicles manufactured after the end of 2002 are type approved to the ULEZ standards. Unfortunately the diesel vehicle situation has been complicated by the manufacturers deliberately cheating the tests (VAG for an example).

However, there is NO post production verification of the emissions except those conducted in the MOT test that apply to both ULEZ "compliant" and non ULEZ compliant vehicles.

Everyday I seen badly maintained vehicles on the road that are of an age that is ULEZ compliant belching smoke and smelly fumes out of their exhausts and some of these are less than three years old.

We are getting rid of our year 2000 cherished car with much sadness. We have purchased a ULEZ compliant replacement. The following are emission figures for both cars:

Non ULEZ Compliant fast idle CO emissions 0 parts per million.

Non ULEZ Compliant fast idle Unburnt Hydrocarbons emissions 14 parts per million.

ULEZ Compliant fast idle CO emissions 0 parts per million.

ULEZ Compliant fast idle Unburnt Hydrocarbons emissions 93 parts per million.

The MOT limit on unburnt Hydrocarbons is 200 parts per million.

If these are the fast idle limits, the emissions will increase as both the revs and load on the motor increase.

So which do you think is the more polluting vehicle and which one should have more right to be allowed in and out of the ULEZ zone without penalty?

Interesting observations there Ian. In your case it is clearly a shame they are not using actually vehicle emissions as the check.

One issue I have a problem with, as do you it seems, is seeing vehicles that are clearly spewing out high levels of particulates and smoke. Vans, cars, trucks... I would love to know where to report these to so some form of action can be taken. If anyone has a suggestion I am all ears.

Thanks- it is only for lorries and buses, but its a start. Its the cars and vans that I think are more prolific in this sense.

There's a 'Contact your local police' link below the 'lorries and buses' sentence but it goes - nowhere [404 error]. Sorry, I should have tested it first time round before giving out the swift reply!

Met Police site has nothing specific to car and van pollution that I can see; the nearest is 'Report a road traffic incident' here. Their site has a section on vehicle nuisance, but that's about noise, street racing and the like, not dirty exhausts. It's not Haringey's pigeon, they only do premises.

if you have a petrol ULEZ compliant petrol car it will be only a a couple  of years before they too fall short of the required standard.As a local decorator I really wish I could work from home but my lovely Mercedes diesel van  is now going to live in rural Wales. I was told to buy diesel a while ago because it was safer than petrol.Another polluting vehicle off the road and another local business looking for a sustainable transport method.As for visible emissions well they will disappear at the end of October when ULEZ kicks in.
