Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

I'm still eagerly anticipating hearing about the plans our local candidates have for Harringay. I'm sure they'll be sharing them with us soon. To fill the gap in the meantime, I thought it would be worth reminding ourselves what the HoL survey said about residents' priorities a couple of years ago:

The first chart shows what members said at the time about their priorities for the residential areas; the second show priorities for Green Lanes. Cllr Nilgun Canver said at eth time we published this that what it showed matched the information they had. The recent consultation for the Harringay Charter supports this.

Statement, March 2010*

Raising our voices as local residents - together!

An open letter to the people of Haringey in the light of the coming local and national elections

Do you want to see…

* improved health services?     * stronger and more empowered local communities?
* better children's services and youth services?     * more attractive streets?
* better-run green spaces?     * less anti-social behaviour?
* environmental sustainability?     * a relevant local economy and decent jobs?
* community-led regeneration & development?
* full respect for diversity?     * more resources for public services generally?

In view of the coming local Council and parliamentary elections we encourage Haringey’s residents to discuss and speak out about their views on key issues affecting our lives and neighbourhoods.

Speaking out for our needs

As local residents we know that there are many improvements needed in our neighbourhoods.

- our environment and streets need to be greener, friendlier and safer
- our public services must be strengthened and expanded, not cut or privatised
- there should be planning and development for community needs - not for the profits of property developers
- we need a much wider range of activities and facilities in all our neighbourhoods, for residents of all ages and interests
- decent and affordable housing for all
- an environmentally sustainable future for our children and future generations

Local decision-making and use of resources should be driven by local people’s needs. We want the best possible decision-making relating to the matters which affect our lives and communities.

We will be sending a special Residents’ Questionnaire** to all candidates (after registration closes in April) asking them to commit to policies that benefit our communities, and to support community organisations. However, we believe that politics is not just for election-time, but for life! We therefore encourage local people to get fully involved in the day to day life of their communities over the coming months and years - and to empower themselves and their neighbours to speak out and make a real difference.

Taking action together

Local people are having an influence by getting together and taking up issues. This can be seen all around Haringey wherever people are active in local residents associations, friends of parks groups, parents groups in schools, youth projects, older people's groups, social and cultural events of all kinds, trade union branches - and all manner of local campaigns, action groups, self-help and mutual aid activities.

These efforts not only help to improve things, they also help to build up a real sense of togetherness and community spirit - surely the most precious thing of all!

We salute the efforts of countless numbers of local residents who are getting together, supporting each other and empowering their communities.

Its up to all of us to get involved!
