If you need someone to re-plaster a wall with soundproofed plasterboards, we can recommend a plasterer called Simon Lawrence. He's just done our master bedroom with insulation boards and I know he does soundproofing as well. His quotes are fair and his work is excellent and he was recommended to us by Tim Guerin, a painter/decorator who crops up a lot in HoL recommendations!
Simon's number is 07864 020089.
Hi Mark, we've had to consider this every now and then as one of our children is a musician and practices a lot. It's not really a decorating issue, much more a structural one. If you want real sound-proofing you need to consider creating an acoustic break between the surface the sound is entering through and the space you want to quieten. Materials need to be laminated in a way which inhibits transmission and ideally 'floated' on each other. Her practice rooms are all designed in this way.
'Muffling' sound is more straightforward and you might achieve that with standard building materials.
Depends a bit on the noise you're trying to reduce, it's source, volume and distance.
You might actually want to consult an architect in the first instance, depends on how complex/long term the issue is.
